The seed

The over-reaction is character as foreshadowing: a real, lifelong sore-point that drives Buggy’s psychology. The chapter even goes out of its way to escalate the taboo’s stakes from “crewman killed” → “village destroyed” within nine pages, making clear this is a load-bearing psychological tell, not just a clown’s running gag.

The payoff

The full backstory — that Shanks teased him about it on the Roger Pirates as a cabin boy — comes much later, but the seed is here and is structurally clean. The taboo persists through the entire series; even in the Final Saga, as a Cross Guild figurehead Yonko, Buggy is still mortally insulted by nose references. Oda built the gag to outlast the character’s narrative function.

Earliest known caller

Recurring gag spotted early; full backstory (Roger Pirates apprentice with Shanks) revealed in Loguetown / post-skip flashbacks.

Why this matters

A textbook example of Oda using comedic over-reaction as psychological foreshadowing. The rule for reading One Piece: when a comic trait is disproportionate to the in-world stakes (a pirate captain killing his own crew over a verbal slip about his nose), the trait is load-bearing and has a serious origin. Apply the same lens to other “compulsive trait” characters (Hancock’s pride, Crocodile’s hidden past, Mihawk’s stillness) — the disproportion is the seed.

Note also: the seed-to-functional-payoff distance is two chapters (Ch. 9 → Ch. 11). Oda is calibrating the reader fast — the gag is established and then immediately weaponized — which is itself a tell that the full backstory payoff (Shanks era) is being saved for a much longer slow-drip.

Crew-wide pattern

The Ch. 12 Mohji cognate establishes a crew design principle: every Buggy officer has a sore-point vanity-trait. Reading the rule forward, future Buggy-crew officer introductions (Cabaji etc.) should each get a similar vanity-trait gag-trigger. Track in Buggy Pirates and Buggy Officers Vanity Taboo.
