Summary

Brook’s backstory completes. In the present, Brook plays the piano for the Straw Hats and produces a Tone Dial — a sound-recording sea-shell he bought from a merchant ship long ago — that holds “the last song sung by my former crew,” their message to Laboon. The chapter flashes back through three layers: Brook alone in the Florian Triangle a decade after leaving Twin Cape, going mad with loneliness and hallucinating his dead crewmates; the crew’s happy seafaring days; and finally the crew’s death — poisoned in battle, the whole Rumbar Pirates (named on-page at last) is annihilated, the ship’s doctor among the dead. Refusing to die quietly, the dying crew records a last performance of “Bink’s Sake” on the Tone Dial so Brook — the lone survivor by grace of the Revive-Revive Fruit — can one day carry it to Laboon, the whale-friend they left at the cape. They forbid anyone to die until the song is finished, and the band thins one player at a time — quartet, trio, duet, solo — until only Brook plays on over the bodies. In the present, Brook resolves to keep that 50-year promise: circle the globe, return to Laboon “from the right direction,” with his pride as a pirate intact.
