Summary
An entirely-flashback chapter (intercut with present-Brook’s narration) recounting Brook’s life with the Rumbar Pirates, fifty years before Thriller Bark. As the crew’s musician-and-swordsman, the 38-year-old Brook wakes the ship each morning with “that song.” A stray baby island whale, Laboon, latches onto the cheerful crew; they feed him, name him, and grow to love him — but the Grand Line is too dangerous to bring “a kid,” so on reaching the Twin Cape they entrust him to the lighthouse-keeper Crocus and stage the famous Promise: round the world, then come back. Three years on, in the cursed Florian Triangle, the crew is struck by an incurable plague contracted in a jungle. Captain Calico Yorki and the dozen infected take one ship to exit via the Calm Belt rather than spread the disease, ordering Brook and the healthy half to sail on with a new ship — and to “give my regards to Laboon.” As Yorki’s ship departs, Brook gathers the crew to send him off with “Binks’s Brew.”
