Chapter 212: Some Justice

Summary

The morning after the civil war ends, rain falls over Sandy Island’s north coast. Aboard a Marine ship offshore, “Black Cage” Hina — a Navy Captain and Smoker’s Marine-Academy contemporary — chides Smoker for the strange rain and for letting the King of Alabasta end the war “without using dance powder,” then proposes towing the captured Baroque Works rainmaking ship Downpour back to HQ along with Crocodile (whom Tashigi is bringing in). She and Smoker settle the dispute with a coin flip — Hina calls heads, Smoker loses (pp. 2-5). In a brief recap-cutaway the Marines’ would-be plan to capture the unconscious Straw Hats is shown overruled by Tashigi, who forbade her men from laying a finger on the sleeping pirates (pp. 5-6) — the omission of the crew from the official account is her doing. The scene shifts to the rain-soaked land healing: the rebellion is over, the desert kingdom blooms, and at Yuba, old Toh-Toh stands by his shovel in the returning rain — “Just three years… that’s all it took. See? Rain.” (pp. 6-11). In the Alubarna palace infirmary the wounded sleep; Vivi, unable to sleep, sits awake at a window with Igaram to “keep watching the rain fall,” and mourns Pell — “I wish I could’ve thanked him. He was the noblest warrior I’ve ever known.” (pp. 12-13). The following day at the eastern port Tamarisk, Tashigi reports to Smoker and Hina and collapses in tears of self-reproach: she let the pirates go when she could have captured them, and gave them aid — “Forgive me. My actions were inexcusable.” Smoker tells her she followed her own sense of justice and shouldn’t apologize, but that a soldier doesn’t cry over this — she has to grow stronger (pp. 14-17). Aboard ship, Marine HQ transmits that, “regarding the capture of Crocodile,” the government’s top ministers have decided to award Smoker and Tashigi medals and promote them both one rank — even though, as Smoker bluntly states, “We weren’t the ones who defeated Crocodile.” HQ admits the point: the government doesn’t want the truth to get out that a band of pirates — the Straw Hat Pirates — saved Alabasta (pp. 17-19). Ordered to appear at an awards ceremony and accept the lie, Smoker refuses: “Tell ‘em to shove off.” (p. 19).

Continuity note — Toh-Toh at Yuba

The vault currently records Toh-Toh as deceased (read as killed by Crocodile’s Suna-Suna mummification at Ch. 179 pp. 6-7). This chapter shows an elderly turbaned man with Toh-Toh’s signature digging shovel standing alive in the returning rain at Yuba (pp. 8-11), watching the rain return and saying “Just three years… that’s all it took.” On the conservative reading this is Toh-Toh alive, which would mean the Ch. 0179 “mummification” was non-fatal / survivable (consistent with forward-canon, in which Toh-Toh lives). This is flagged for the synthesizer: the Ch. 0179 death-reading and Toh-Toh’s status: deceased frontmatter likely need reconciliation. The chapter does not name the figure on-page; the identification rests on the shovel-prop, the Yuba setting, and the Koza-father flashback dialogue.
