The seed
Enel condenses the entire sky’s thundercloud into a single colossal black sphere and drops it on an island to annihilate it — his ultimate, Raigo (VIZ declares it “Kingdom Come”). First dropped on Angel Island Ch. 294; conjured at climactic scale and named in the duel Ch. 297.
The name is the tell. Raigo / 雷迎 is a homophonic pun on 来迎 (raigō) — the Japanese-Buddhist “welcoming approach,” in which Amida (Amitābha) Buddha descends on a cloud to WELCOME the spirits of the dead into the Pure Land (the raigō-zu motif of Pure Land art). Oda swaps the first character 来 (rai, “coming/welcoming”) for 雷 (rai, “thunder”) — keeping 迎 (“welcome/meet”). So the literal force of the name is a cloud-borne “thunder-welcome”: the God-figure arrives on a cloud to “welcome” a whole population into death. The payoff
This is also confirmed at the etymology layer itself: Fandom (on the Goro Goro no Mi page) documents the 来迎→雷迎 homophone-swap and the Amida-welcoming-the-dead meaning explicitly — i.e. the name-as-meaning is sourced, not inferred. VIZ’s localization “Kingdom Come” (the Lord’s-Prayer phrase, also an English death idiom) preserves the same God-brings-the-end register in a Christian key.
