What we know

A dense mass of clouds hanging high in the sky with no air currents or condensation within it — “a petrified cloud,” per Mont Blanc Cricket’s explanation in Ch. 229 (pages 3–4). Per one theory it has remained unchanged for thousands of years. When it drifts over the sea it can blot out the sun, turning day suddenly to night (the “daytime night” phenomenon mariners report near Jaya). It is the cloud-platform a Knock-Up Stream must launch a ship onto in order to reach Sky Island (pages 9–10). Cricket frames the whole picture as hearsay and unverified theory.

Etymology

Emperor Cloud (VIZ; later wiki “Imperial Cumulus,” also “Imperio-Cumulus”) is a coined cloud-genus name parodying real meteorological Latin. Genuine cloud names pair a Latin genus (cumulus “heap,” cirrus, stratus) with modifiers; Oda invents a top-tier, “emperor/imperial”-grade cumulus — a giant, ancient, fossilized super-cloud that outranks ordinary clouds and serves as the base for the Sea-Clouds and Skypiea. Chronology / structure

The Emperor Cloud is the destination platform; the Knock-Up Stream is the propulsion. Reaching Sky Island requires the two to coincide — a Stream erupting directly beneath the cloud while it hangs overhead.

Open questions about this topic

• Sky Island Existence — whether the Emperor Cloud + Knock-Up Stream route actually reaches an inhabited Sky Island, or is, as Bellamy insists, a lubbers’ fairy tale.
