The theory

Devil-Fruit users, the theory holds, are physiologically or metaphysically barred from reaching Laugh Tale — the final island. The reading grew out of the Wano flashbacks: once Ch. 966–Ch. 967 (2019-2020) showed the fruit-light roster on the Roger Pirates’ last leg and struck apprentice Buggy down with a fever on the eve of the final voyage, Tumblr posts (“Laugh Tale kills Devil Fruit users,” saiyef) and One Piece Wiki forum threads began treating the roster as an in-world constraint rather than a coincidence. It crystallized in a WorstGen thread (CensoredbyWG, 2023-06-17) that paired the barrier with a Chopper-cure escape hatch, and spread further through Sportskeeda and Facebook recaps.

The steelman

The Roger Pirates are the only crew ever confirmed to have reached the final island, and the roster shown making that last leg is conspicuously devoid of fruit-users: Roger (canonically fruitless — Kaido confirms his power was pure Haki, Ch. 1047), Rayleigh, Crocus, Gaban, and the borrowed recruit Oden all fight with Haki and swordsmanship, not fruits (Ch. 966, Ch. 967). The two fruit-linked people attached to that voyage are read as the exceptions that prove the rule: apprentice Buggy, who ate the Bara Bara no Mi, is struck by a sudden fever on the eve of the final leg and never reaches the island (Ch. 967); and stowaway Kozuki Toki, bearer of the forward-only Toki Toki no Mi, is ill and dropped at Wano rather than continuing (Ch. 964). The theory reads this against the established cosmology that the sea rejects fruit-eaters, robbing them of their strength and even their will to live underwater (Ch. 19, Ch. 89). Because Luffy is a fruit-user destined to reach Laugh Tale, proponents narrow the literal form — the barrier is a curable illness (Chopper’s arc), or Luffy’s Nika fruit, tied to the island’s own mythology, is the singular exception — and rest the theory’s weight on the composition of the one crew that got there.

The strongest attacks fielded against the steelman (type · severity · standing):

• underdetermination · fatal · kill-shot vs SC1 — the same final voyage carried fruit-users: stowaway Toki (Toki Toki no Mi) and apprentice Buggy (Bara Bara no Mi) both boarded the Oro Jackson (Ch. 966 p.14). The fruit-light final leg is ordinary personnel churn, not a filter. The roster fact survives; the barrier inference does not — standing (fact narrowed, inference conceded).

The verdict

Mixed. The label follows mechanically from the split: the central sub-claim (SC1) scores confirmed (0.88) once narrowed to the bare roster fact — the one crew ever confirmed to reach the final island did make its last leg with no active fruit-user among those who landed, and Roger’s fruitlessness is explicit on-page (Ch. 1047). SC2 lands plausible (0.80) as an observational fact. But the theory’s actual thesis — that fruit-users are barred — is carried by SC4, and SC4 falls: the gate to Laugh Tale is route-knowledge (the four Road Poneglyphs) framed around all pirates, and fruit-user Emperors are canon contenders for it. That two-rung gap between a confirmed central roster fact and a contradicted barrier thesis is exactly what the rubric names “mixed.”

What survives is small and honest: a fruit-light roster (n=1) and two fruit-users who happened to get sick before the island. What falls is everything that made the theory a claim rather than a coincidence — the fruit-causation (the same fever stranded fruitless Shanks), the sea-cosmology gate (a submersion penalty a deck-riding fruit-user shrugs off), and the active barrier itself (no on-page footprint; multiple contradicting cites). The theory reduces to “Roger’s one confirmed crew happened to be fruit-light,” which is a roster coincidence, not a law.
