Invisible Beast-Growling Intruder Aboard The Thousand Sunny

The seed
Aboard the Thousand Sunny an unseen intruder raises the anchor and opens a hatch on their own, stretches Luffy ’s mouth, forces Zoro ’s sword to stab it (drawing an “ARGH!”), licks Nico Robin and grabs and throws Sanji — and Robin twice hears “the growling of a beast.” The crew debate ghost vs. supernatural power and note it spared them despite “a thousand chances” to kill.
A negative-space seed: an invisible enemy revealed only through its effects and an animal element, prefiguring an invisibility Devil Fruit paired with a beast/animal hybrid later in the arc.
Ch. 446 pp. 16-18 — the invisible man stalks Nami in the bath
An unseen man ambushes Nami in the mansion’s bath, having been invisible and eavesdropping the whole time. He says he prefers her to “that woman on the ship… because you’re weaker,” and vows “to make you my bride ,” before escaping out a window. Adds a bride-hunting motive to the invisible-intruder seed and confirms the unseen presence is a man with an invisibility power.
Ch. 447 p. 7 — the invisible man is NAMED Absalom; the bride-hunt is explicit
The unseen intruder is now named Absalom (heard but still invisible). Inside Hogback’s Mansion he grabs Nami in the second-floor hallway and abandons the bounty hunt for a personal obsession: “Hogback… I was looking for a bride! I like that woman! I’ll make her mine! ” Confirms the unseen presence is a man with an invisibility power, fixated on Nami as a forced bride — the load for the arc’s forced-wedding subplot.
Ch. 451 p. 5 — Absalom names his chosen bride outright
In the Wonder Garden sequence, Absalom states plainly that his chosen bride is “one of the pirates that entered the island” — a “strong-minded and elegant… delicate, living human” (= Nami ) — and mobilizes his zombie generals to capture the intruders. He rejects the warthog-zombie Lola , who in jealousy charges off to kill the rival woman (pp. 5, 17), escalating the forced-wedding setup.
Ch. 454 p. 3-8 — Nami turns Absalom’s bride-obsession against him
Absalom keeps hunting Nami ’s group (invisible, barging into Perona ’s room), but Nami turns his own bride-obsession against him: posing as “Namizo,” she fakes encouragement to the lovesick warthog-zombie Lola , who throws herself at Absalom to propose — giving Nami, Usopp and Chopper their escape (pp. 3-8). The invisible-marriage plot is still live but is being out-maneuvered.
Ch. 457 pp. 15-17 — Absalom escalates from declaration to abduction
The invisible Absalom physically grabs Nami — “this woman is going to marry me today” — masks her scent with a stronger smell so Sanji cannot track her, then vanishes with her, ordering the zombies to “capture them and bring them to Master Moria ” (pp. 15-17). The bride-hunt advances from threat to act; Usopp ’s Viper Star Six fails to stop him.
Pays off
Ch. 464 — the invisible-man / bride plot is foiled
The invisible-man-hunts-a-bride arc closes on-page: Sanji shields the unconscious Nami in her wedding dress (“won’t stain your white dress”) and beats Absalom unconscious with Extra Hachis Hash before the forced marriage can complete (pp. 13-16). Absalom loses both the bride and the duel. Every element of the seed is now on-page: the invisibility power is named — the Clear-Clear Fruit (@0464 pp.7-8, turns the user and anything they touch invisible); the “beast” / animal element is Absalom’s surgical lion-head / elephant-skin / bear-and-gorilla-muscle chimera body (Hogback ’s work, revealed Ch. 463 /@0464, p.11); and the bride-hunt is resolved (foiled). status flips pending→confirmed; payoff_chapter: [[Chapters/0464]] (in-window, 0464 ≤ 0467).
The payoff
Resolved Ch. 464 : that beat has now paid off on-page — the bride plot is foiled and Absalom defeated (see the [!confirmed] callout above). The seed is now confirmed . Why this matters
Oda’s “negative-space” introduction — an antagonist is felt and heard (touch, growl, moved props) for chapters before being seen, so the reveal lands on an enemy the reader has already met blind.
