Firsts
  • Moria details the full lifecycle of his shadow-zombies: the original owner's character lingers in the zombie at first, but every zombie EVENTUALLY becomes completely obedient to Moria no matter how strong its will — and once fully obedient, the shadow's original owner LOSES ALL THEIR MEMORIES. An extreme size difference between shadow and body only delays this; it is 'only a matter of time' (pp. 5-6).
  • Moria reveals shadows cannot simply be reclaimed by beating or killing him — they only return if he ORDERS them ('go back to your original owners') while he is their living master, OR if he is made weak enough to be forced to. This sets the win-condition for the whole arc (p. 3).
  • Moria's DOPPELMAN: he fights via a shadow double, so Luffy's Gum-Gum Pistol/Gatling pass through and are blocked by a swarm of shadow-bats ('Brick Bat'); Luffy literally 'can't hit him' (pp. 4-9).
  • Moria states his own backstory motive in his words: he was once 'full of ambition and overconfident in my own abilities,' but learned never to act alone again and to become Pirate King 'by simply using the help of others' — i.e. his zombie army (pp. 5-6).
  • ABSALOM is named in full as 'Sir Absalom,' confirmed as the invisible man, one of the 'MYSTERIOUS FOUR,' and commander of ALL the zombie generals; he weighs over 600 pounds (p. 15) yet has NO bounty (p. 19).
  • Hogback transplanted 'the power of the wilderness' (beast abilities) into Absalom's living human body, which is why Sanji's kicks knocking him back is treated as impossible by onlookers (p. 16).
  • Sanji's stolen shadow had been wasted in a weak penguin zombie ('all bark and no bite'), its character barely lingering, so Sanji is effectively shadow-free and fights on his own skill (p. 13). Separately, Absalom laments that his own most powerful zombie generals 'seem to have been crushed by your captain's zombie' (Oars) (p. 14).
  • Sanji rescues the drugged, unconscious Nami from Absalom's forced wedding and confirms his salt-trick: he uses Usopp's Salt Ball to locate the invisible Absalom by his taste-reaction, then lands 'Veau Vengeance' (pp. 11, 18).
  • Callbacks confirmed on-page: Absalom is the invisible 'beast' who peeped on Nami in the bath and who licked Robin on the Thousand Sunny — fueling Sanji's rage beyond mere annoyance (pp. 17-19).

Summary

Two parallel fights run through the night of Thriller Bark. Luffy confronts Gecko Moria over the stolen shadows; Moria explains the rules of the game — he is the shadows’ living master, so brute force won’t free them: Luffy has to beat him badly enough to make him give the order, while every captured zombie inevitably becomes fully obedient and erases its owner’s memories. Moria fights through his shadow double, the Doppelman, and a swarm of shadow-bats (‘Brick Bat’), and Luffy finds he literally can’t land a hit. Meanwhile Sanji intercepts the invisible Absalom — who is hauling the drugged, unconscious Nami toward a forced wedding — kicks him off her, and learns Absalom is ‘Sir Absalom’ of the Mysterious Four, commander of the zombie generals, his human body surgically augmented by Hogback. When Sanji realizes this is the same invisible creep who spied on Nami in the bath and licked Robin on the Sunny, his anger explodes; he flushes Absalom out with Usopp’s Salt Ball and connects with a full-power kick.
