Chapter 448: Moria

Summary

In the Cindry shrine-room, Nami, Usopp and Tony Tony Chopper read old newspaper clippings and piece together a horror: the stitched “servant” is Victoria Cindry, a once-famous stage actress of aristocratic stock who fell from the stage and died ten years ago in an accident — meaning the island’s inhabitants are genuinely reanimated dead. Their panic is interrupted by a surprise jack-in-the-box zombie (“this room isn’t the treasure chamber!”), and a sword-wielding mansion guard vows to capture them. Meanwhile in the fog-bound forest, Luffy’s group (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Robin, Franky, and the newly-rejoined Brook) realizes the patchwork forest creatures all bear bandages, stitches and a number — they serve someone. They are then harried by floating “ghosts” that say “Negative!” and, on passing through a body, plunge their victims into suicidal gloom; only Zoro shrugs it off (“you don’t have discipline and willpower”), while a hidden “Horo horo horo” laugh marks the unseen puppeteer. Reaching a vast cemetery, the crew effortlessly routs a mob of graveyard zombies, who then grovel and let slip that they are shadow-robbed: an old-man zombie begs the pirates to defeat the man who cursed them — “when our shadows return, I’ll thank you.” Noting the zombies cast no shadow “just like Brook,” the crew asks who runs the island. Robin knows the name: Gecko Moria — a fearsome man whose original bounty topped Luffy’s, and one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
