- THE FOUR powers of Thriller Bark are introduced: Warlord GECKO MORIA (captain), DR. HOGBACK (zombie surgeon), ABSALOM 'of the Graveyard' (commander of the zombie soldiers & zombie generals), and 'Ghost Princess' PERONA (commander of the wild zombies & surprise zombies) (pp. 4, 6-7, 18-19).

- GECKO MORIA is named as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and 'the guy who steals shadows'; he has had his eye on the Straw Hats from the moment they arrived (pp. 4-5, 16).
- The dark forest is full of shadow-robbed VICTIMS — 'cursed,' unable to be called truly alive, who flee the sun and just want to 'walk under the sun once' before they die (pp. 4-5).
- DR. HOGBACK makes the island's zombies; his servant CINDRY is a girl who 'died in an accident' and was revived, now throwing plates and serving him (pp. 6-8).
- BROOK (last seen ch. 442) reappears, crashing into Hogback's lab with 'Yo ho ho ho!' — startling the Straw Hats and Hogback, who recognizes him on sight ('It's you! How did you get in here?!') (pp. 9-10).
- The NIGHT HUNT begins at the stroke of midnight: zombie soldiers and zombie generals rise to hunt and capture the intruders (pp. 11-20).

Summary
The Straw Hats, split into two groups exploring the fog-bound ship-island, learn what they are up against. In the dark forest, Luffy’s group (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Robin) meets a crowd of shadow-robbed victims who explain that the island belongs to GECKO MORIA, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and “the guy who steals shadows.” Cursed and unable to walk in the sun, the victims beg the pirates to defeat Moria; Luffy cheerfully agrees, since they came looking for the shadow-thief anyway. Meanwhile Usopp’s group (Usopp, Nami, Chopper, Franky) spies on DR. HOGBACK in his mansion laboratory as he dotes on his plate-throwing zombie servant CINDRY — “the same girl who died in an accident” — and works on an almost-complete zombie. BROOK suddenly crashes through the lab with a cheerful “Yo ho ho ho!”; Hogback recognizes the living skeleton and declares the intruders have seen too much. As the clock strikes midnight, Hogback’s “night hunt” begins. The zombie general ABSALOM “of the Graveyard” rallies the zombie soldiers, “Ghost Princess” PERONA marshals her wild and surprise zombies, and the colossal Moria himself awakens after four days asleep — revealing that Thriller Bark is no island at all but the world’s largest pirate ship. The Straw Hats steel themselves and head into the ghost house.
New reveals
- “The Four.” Thriller Bark’s power structure is named: Warlord Gecko Moria (captain), Dr. Hogback (zombie-making surgeon), Absalom (commander of the zombie soldiers & generals), Perona (commander of the wild & surprise zombies) (pp. 4, 18-19).
- Thriller Bark = the world’s largest pirate ship. The mansion’s backdrop “main mast” reveals the whole island is a single gigantic ship with a village on it, “so gigantic you can’t see the whole thing” (p. 17).
- Gecko Moria — Seven Warlords member, the shadow-thief; had the Straw Hats targeted from arrival; sleeps for days at a time and wakes ravenous (pp. 4-5, 14-16).
- The forest of cursed victims — people whose shadows Moria stole, who flee the sun and “can’t be called truly alive” (pp. 4-5).
- Cindry — Hogback’s zombie servant, a girl who “died in an accident,” now revived (pp. 7-8).
- Brook reappears at Hogback’s lab; Hogback knows him on sight (pp. 9-10).
- The night hunt — at midnight the zombie army rises to capture intruders (pp. 11-20).

Open questions raised
- How exactly does Moria steal shadows, and how are stolen shadows used to animate corpses into zombies?
- What is Brook doing on Thriller Bark, and how does Hogback already know him?
- What was the “unfinished zombie” the crew glimpsed, and what is Cindry’s full story?
- How will the two split Straw Hat groups survive the night hunt with Moria’s army roused?
