Chapter 342: The Messenger of Darkness

Summary

The night of the flood (Aqua Laguna ongoing) becomes a night of overlapping heists. Outside, Franky and the Franky Family surround Galley-La HQ, hunting the Straw Hats; Franky’s plan is to seize Usopp (“the long nose”) as bait, have his men shout a false rumor through town, and then “go right now and make that the truth” by luring the rest of the crew out (pp. 2–6). On a rooftop nearby, Luffy, Zoro, and Chopper resolve to use this night as their “last chance to find out if Robin’s on our side” (p. 6). Inside the besieged HQ, a bedridden Iceburg quietly summons his secretary Kalifa and foreman Paulie, dismisses everyone, and gives Paulie a secret, high-risk errand — “I’ve thought long and hard, but you’re the only one I can ask” (pp. 7–11). Paulie slips out (the eavesdropping foremen joke it must be Iceberg’s “last will and testament”); three foremen stay to guard, declaring “the four of us will be enough” (pp. 8, 11). Paulie’s task: in the President’s office, peel back the carpet under the desk to reveal a built-in safe and open it with a radioed combination, retrieving a hidden valuable Iceberg has been guarding (pp. 12, 19). Meanwhile Nico Robin is shown coordinating an infiltration with a tall masked accomplice — a man in a horned iron mask and a black-and-white checkered cloak (Blueno in disguise) — who asks “Ready, Nico Robin?” and waits on her signal (p. 13). Robin’s job is to “create a distraction”: she sets off a large plaza explosion (the “flashy signal”) that rattles Galley-La and the town but leaves Iceberg “only startled” (pp. 14–15). An intruder “in disguise” whips up the wall to the roof, drawing the foremen into pursuit (“You didn’t think we’d leave the roof unguarded, did you?”) (pp. 16–17). The chapter closes as Robin and the masked Blueno reach Paulie at the very moment he extracts the safe’s contents — “the thing Mr. Iceberg was talking about” — and corner him with a flat command: “Hand it over” (pp. 19). A side note: Chopper, separated, frantically asks “Where’s Luffy?” (p. 18).

• Franky’s siege plan (pp. 2–6): Franky and the Franky Family ring Galley-La HQ. His scheme is to catch Usopp (“the long nose”) as a hostage/bait, have his men spread a false rumor through town, and then “make that the truth” by drawing out the rest of the Straw Hats — “We can use him to draw out the rest!!” (p. 4).
• Iceburg’s secret errand to Paulie (pp. 7–11): Bedridden Iceburg summons Kalifa (his secretary) and Paulie, sends everyone else away, and entrusts Paulie alone with a dangerous task — “I’ve thought long and hard, but you’re the only one I can ask. Do you accept?” / “This may come with great risks.” Paulie: “Just leave it to me.”
• The hidden safe (pp. 12, 19): The errand is to enter the President’s office, “peel back the carpet under the desk” to expose a built-in safe, and open it with a combination radioed to Paulie (“First, six, right…”). The safe holds the valuable Iceberg has secretly been keeping — “the thing Mr. Iceberg was talking about” / “You can’t know how valuable that is” (p. 19).
• “The four of us will be enough” (pp. 8, 11): With Paulie dispatched, the remaining Galley-La foremen joke about Iceberg’s “last will and testament” and decide three of them are sufficient to guard the HQ — “Sure. The four of us will be enough.” (The foremen are not individually named on-page this chapter; per vault canon these are Lucci, Kaku, and the others — see cross-reference.)
• Robin coordinating with a masked accomplice (p. 13): Robin is shown directing an infiltration alongside a tall man in a horned iron mask and a black-and-white checkered cloak (Blueno in disguise), who radios “Ready, Nico Robin?” A four-person team “will carry out your assignments as soon as you see the signal.”
