Chapter 654: A Gam of Whales

Summary

Having left Fish-Man Island, the Thousand Sunny ascends toward the surface of the New World. While the crew fishes for deep-sea giants — pulling up nesting “matryoshka” fish that swallow one another — the sea around them begins to drag the ship down: a White-Strom, an enormous white whirlpool that opens without warning near the sea floor and is said to warp ships an unfathomable distance away and return them empty, their crews dead. Franky’s Coup de Burst fires too late, but the Sunny instead strikes a body in the dark: an entire gam of Island Whales. Brook first mistakes one for Laboon, then recognizes their scarred snouts and realizes this is Laboon’s own pod — the family he was separated from fifty years ago. Brook sings “Bink’s Sake” to them and reassures them that Laboon is alive and full-grown on the far side of the world. The whales answer with the song and carry the Sunny up the upward current, delivering the crew into the violent skies and seething seas of the New World. New reveals

• The New World deep sea hosts a phenomenon called the White-Strom — a giant white whirlpool that opens near the sea floor, “like a live, writhing dragon,” with no warning. Legend: a caught ship is dragged an unfathomable distance away and surfaces days later entirely empty — crew dead (p. 8–9).
