- Furigana/kanji double-layer. The furigana ホワイトストローム (Howaito Sutorōmu) spells an English portmanteau of 'white' + 'maelstrom' (whirlpool) — a white-water deep-sea whirlpool. The kanji it glosses, 白い竜, literally read 'White Dragon' — directly matching the chapter's in-text simile that the whirlpool moves 'like a live, writhing dragon.'

- Ch. 654: Legend (per Brook) — a ship caught in its stream is dragged an unfathomable distance away and resurfaces days later entirely empty, meaning its crew is dead. Luffy mis-frames it as a “magic warp zone” (corrected).
- Establishes the New-World deep sea as a graveyard of crews and the New-World threshold as far rougher than Paradise. The Straw Hats are nearly caught by it before the gam of Island Whales carries the Sunny clear and up the upward currents.

- Furigana — ホワイトストローム (Howaito Sutorōmu): a portmanteau of the English “white” + “maelstrom” (whirlpool). The plain spoken name = “white whirlpool.”
