The claim that the oversized straw hat preserved in the National Treasure chamber at the apex of Pangaea Castle in Mariejois once belonged to Joy Boy — the Void-Century liberator the twenty founding kingdoms killed 800 years ago — and that Imu keeps it as the world-breaking “hidden treasure,” with Luffy as the successor who inherits Joy Boy’s “will in hat form.”

The reading was born the day Ch. 906 leaked (~August 2018): the panel closing on Imu’s concealed chamber became an instant r/OnePiece fixation, and the adjacent “National Treasure” fusion with Doflamingo’s buried-alive secret made the “giant hat = the treasure” leap feel inevitable. It hardened after the 2022 Nika reveal (Ch. 1044-1045) and again after Joy Boy’s first on-page silhouette (Ch. 1122), and is now the default fan explanation for “Marijoa’s hidden treasure,” repeated across every major anime-news explainer (EpicDope, ScreenRant, CBR, Sportskeeda).

The steelman

Chapter 906 closes on the World Government’s most jealously guarded secret: a hidden chamber at the apex of Pangaea Castle where Imu — the hooded sovereign to whom even the Five Elders kneel — sits before a great globe and the Empty Throne, carrying the wanted poster of the new “Fifth Emperor” Luffy. The theory reads the adjacent “National Treasure” as an enormous straw hat, too large for a normal human, preserved as a relic. Immediately before, a Level-6 Doflamingo insists he was buried alive so he could not spill “Marijoa’s hidden treasure,” a secret whose mere existence “would shake the world to its foundations.” That the WG’s hidden ruler personally keeps a straw hat — Luffy’s exact emblem — is presented as motive, not sentimentality: the hat encodes the identity/promise the founders erased.

The reading gains force from the series’ own hat-stewardship grammar. Luffy’s straw hat descends Roger→Shanks→Luffy as an inherited pledge, Robin identifies Luffy “by the hat,” and the hat is drawn as the primary symbol from Chapter 1. Chapter 1122’s on-page Joy Boy silhouette — a hat-wearing figure standing roughly face-height to the giant Emet — is later cited as the size match: too big for a human hat, right for Joy Boy, and consistent with a Nika-fruit user whose clothing gigantifies.
