Luffy Decides To Tame The Kraken

The seed
The declaration is reinforced and acted on: Luffy overrides the crew’s “run away / cut it up” plans — “We’re keeping that octopus as a pet! ” (p. 8) — and subdues the Kraken non-lethally with a Haki-hardened Gear-Third Elephant Gun rather than killing it (p. 14). A tamed legendary octopus would be a navigational/combat asset for the remaining ~10,000 m descent. Fits Luffy’s recurring tame-the-giant-beast pattern (cf. Momoo ’s flinch-from-Luffy register; the Rusukaina beasts).
The payoff
The tame-the-Kraken seed pays off in combat: the New Fish-Man Pirates summon their “slave” Kraken (“I brought you from the North Pole just for this!! now get to work!!”) to crush the Straw Hats, but it is Surume Luffy befriended on the descent. It recognizes Luffy (“We’re friends!” / “Surume, it’s me!”) and turns on its would-be masters , attacking the fish-men. The tamed monster is now an ally, exactly as the Ch. 0604-0605 “Let’s tame it!!” declaration set up.

Why this matters
Oda front-loads the “Luffy decides to befriend/tame the monster” beat the instant the threat appears — a prop-tell (the grin + the declaration) that primes the reader for the Kraken’s heel-turn into an ally on the descent.
