Summary
In Okobore Town in the Kuri region of Wano, the poor go hungry while clean food harvested at Paradise Farm is hauled off as tribute for the Beasts Pirates. Animal Kingdom Pirates Headliner Speed (a Horse SMILE user) escorts the “Food Treasure Barge” toward Bakura Town, where fellow Headliner Holdem — a lion (Kamijiro) growing from his belly via a SMILE fruit — has taken the child Otama hostage at his mansion, believing the disguised Luffy (“Luffytaro”) and his samurai companions to be members of Shutenmaru’s Atamayama Thieves Brigade. Okiku warns Luffy that Holdem answers to Jack the Drought, Kaido’s right-hand, who in fact survived his wreck at sea and arrived in Wano days ago. Rather than fight, Luffy’s group plans to grab the food and run, but when Holdem tortures Otama’s cheeks with pliers and prepares to execute Okiku, Luffy snatches Otama free with Komachiyo’s help and, enraged, blasts Holdem with Red Hawk. Meanwhile Basil Hawkins arrives at the entrance of Bakura Town, and Zoro (“Zolojuro”) moves to silence anyone who might recognize them in the closed country.
New reveals
- Speed — Animal Kingdom Pirates Headliner, ate the Horse SMILE Fruit (horse-human hybrid; runs her “Food Treasure Barge”). First on-page appearance (p. 4).
- Holdem — Animal Kingdom Pirates Headliner with a lion, Kamijiro, growing from his belly via a SMILE fruit; wields a “trick mechanism sword.” First on-page appearance (p. 6).
- Jack the Drought is alive — his ships sank into the ocean at Zou, but “he is not dead in the least; he arrived here several days ago” and now sits in control of Kuri as Kaido’s right-hand (pp. 8–9).
- Wano’s oppression structure: harvests from clean-water Paradise Farm are extorted as tribute, the farmers paid in scraps and forced to “slip out the back way to Okobore,” where townsfolk starve and drink river water (pp. 2–3).
- The disguised crew operate under cover names: Luffy is “Luffytaro,” Zoro is “Zolojuro.”
- Shutenmaru, boss of the Atamayama Thieves Brigade, is named (off-page) as the man Holdem mistakes Luffy for an associate of (p. 7).

Notable panels
- Page 1 — Cover / chapter title. Cover-story panel: “The Saga of the Self-Proclaimed Straw Hat Fleet, Vol. 44, bonus story: ‘There Is Unbreakable Fabric in This Town’” — a blond figure (clearly Bellamy: his spiral jolly-roger on his tank-top back, a skull-and-crossbones waste bin lower-left) at a drafting/design table sketching a garment (Straw Hat Grand Fleet cover series). Vol. 44 of Limited-Cover-Series-No-23-The-Saga-of-the-Self-Proclaimed-Straw-Hat-Fleet — third straight Bellamy/dyed-goods bonus strip (Vols. 42–44); @0916 had no cover page (color spread), so the serial jumps Vol. 43→Vol. 44. (No color spread this chapter.)
- Page 2 — Okobore Town, Kuri: a starving baby, scolded children, and Otsuru asking for “evil-purging herbs.”
- Page 4 — Speed’s full-body debut; caption “Animal Kingdom Pirates, Headliner SPEED — Horse SMILE Fruit.”
- Page 6 — Holdem’s debut: lion Kamijiro roaring from his abdomen, Otama in its jaws.
- Page 15 — Holdem reveals the pliers torturing Otama’s cheeks; Luffy’s “Pliers…?!” reaction turns the fight.
- Pages 16–17 — Luffy’s “Gum-Gum… Red Hawk!!” detonates Holdem; final spread on Luffy’s furious eyes. “To be continued…”
Open questions raised
- What exactly is Otama’s “millet dumpling” cheek power, and where did it come from?
- Who is Shutenmaru and what is the Atamayama Thieves Brigade’s role against the Beasts Pirates?
- How will Hawkins (a Supernova now serving Kaido) react to encountering the disguised Straw Hats in a closed country?
- Now that Luffy has openly attacked a Headliner, how badly has he blown the crew’s low-profile plan?
