Summary

In the bamboo forest of Wano, Luffy tells the feverish girl Otama that the Ace she has been waiting for is dead; she screams that he is a liar and faints. The blacksmith Tenguyama Hitetsu — a long-nosed katana smith and “cute girl kokeshi doll collector” — explains that this ruined place was once Amigasa, the village of woven hats, destroyed over a year ago by X. Drake, a new headliner of Kaido’s forces, whose attack killed the five samurai who protected it. He recounts how, nearly four years ago, a starving Amigasa was saved when Ace and his crew shipwrecked nearby; Ace befriended little Otama and promised to come back for her. To repay the favor of the food Otama cooked, Luffy borrows a kimono and two of Hitetsu’s blades — including the cursed Excellent-Grade sword Kitetsu II — and rides a lion-dog out of the bamboo to find a doctor. They cross the poisoned wasteland (boars, tigers, a “shark-odile,” contaminated water, Kaido’s weapons factory, and a private farm that feeds only the Shogun and Kaido) before Luffy spots a swordsman cutting down booze-stealing bandits: it is Zoro, disguised as the wanted ronin “Zorojuro.” As the pair reunite over stolen (poisoned) meat, one of Kaido’s headliners and his beast-men arrive accusing “Straw Hat” of attacking their men, and Luffy and Zoro — Kin’emon’s “don’t cause a fuss” be damned — draw to fight.
