What we know

Ch. 97: Cursed swords (妖刀 yōtō) are a canonical metaphysical category in the One Piece world. Per Matsu (page 14): “The first Kitetsu and its successors are good blades, but they’re all cursed!! Famous swordsmen have died tragic deaths because they wielded the Kitetsu swords. These days, no swordsman in the world uses a Kitetsu… and if he did, he wouldn’t be around long.”
Ch. 97: The curse is lineage-inherited — a graded-sword-lineage (Kitetsu I / II / III) can carry the curse across generations of blades.
Ch. 97: A wielder can wager against the curse — Zoro (page 15) bets his bare arm on his luck against Kitetsu III’s curse, and wins. The sword accepts Zoro as a worthy wielder. The mechanism: wielder’s luck can override the curse if it’s strong enough.

Chronology / structure

The chapter establishes that the curse is a separable property from sword-grade — Kitetsu I is Supreme + cursed; Kitetsu III is Fine + cursed; quality and karma are orthogonal axes.

Etymology & real-world basis

Name-craft (sourced; surfaced by Ch. 912 naming Kitetsu II + the smith Kotetsu)

Kitetsu 鬼徹 literally = “Demon / Ogre / Oni Piercer” (鬼 ki/oni “demon” + 徹 tetsu “pierce/penetrate”).
Kotetsu 虎徹 = “Tiger Piercer” — the smith Kotetsu (forger of Kitetsu II, ancestor of Kozuki Sukiyaki) echoes the real Edo-period swordsmith Nagasone Kotetsu (長曽祢虎徹), ranked among the 12 Saijō Ōwazamono (Supreme-Grade) in the real-world Wazamono classification — the same in-world top tier the Sword Grading System borrows.
Hitetsu 飛徹 = “Flying Piercer” — the living smith carries the same 徹 tetsu “pierce” morpheme, marking all three (Kitetsu / Kotetsu / Hitetsu) as one Wano swordsmith lineage.
The curse itself draws on Sengo Muramasa, the Muromachi-era swordsmith whose blades in 18th-c.-onward folklore are yōtō 妖刀 (“cursed blades”) that hunger for blood and drive their wielder to murder or suicide — the direct real-world model for the Kitetsu line’s wielder-killing curse.

What is the curse’s mechanism — does the sword itself possess agency (it chooses to cut its wielder when the wielder is unworthy), or is it a karmic-pattern that draws bad luck to the wielder?
Are there other named cursed-sword lineages besides the Kitetsu? (Forward-canon: Shodai Kitetsu / Nidai Kitetsu / Sandai Kitetsu is one lineage; the Murakumogiri is not cursed; the Yoru is not flagged as cursed; the Wado Ichimonji is not cursed.)
Does Zoro’s luck-vs-curse win at Ch. 97 neutralize the curse, or does it persist latently? (Forward: the Kitetsu strains in his hand demanding blood recurring beat suggests latent-persistence.)
