What we know
- Ch. 97: The three-tier sword-grading-system is canonical world-taxonomy. First on-page articulation by Tashigi (page 11): “the 12 Supreme Grade Swords, the 21 Excellent Grade Swords and the 40 Fine Grade Swords”. (VIZ 40 Fine is an early-translation variant; canon-50.)
- Ch. 97: Sword-shop merchants (e.g., Matsu) use the rank-system as a canonical pricing-and-respect-grammar. A Fine-Grade sword (Kitetsu III) is priced at 1 million berries (page 13); a Great-Grade sword (Wado Ichimonji) at 10 million berries (page 8) — 10x pricing-ratio between adjacent tiers.
- Ch. 97: A sword’s grade can be paired with a cursed-sword (yōtō) status orthogonally — Kitetsu I (Supreme + cursed), II (Excellent + cursed), III (Fine + cursed). The grade is quality, the curse is karma.

- Worlds Greatest Swordsman — does the rank-system determine the world’s greatest swordsman title-holder, or is the title independent of sword-grade? (Mihawk’s Yoru is canonically Supreme-Grade, but the title is swordsman-not-sword.)
- Who maintains the registry? Is there a central authority that grades-and-publishes the 21 Famous Swords list, or is it tradition-by-convention?
