Firsts
  • Having absorbed the shadows of every zombie on Thriller Bark (~1000), Gecko Moria has swollen into a colossal monster 'more powerful than Oars ever was,' able to 'split the island open with a single blow' — a desperate last gambit to run out the clock until the dawn sun forces the Straw Hats to retreat (pp. 2-3).
  • Luffy re-enters Gear Second to fight the giant Moria, chaining Jet Rocket (p. 7), Jet Bazooka (p. 8) and Jet Shell (p. 14); controlling 1000 shadows is 'too much for the mind to bear,' so as Moria loses consciousness his command slips and the absorbed shadows begin escaping his body (pp. 8-9).
  • Luffy combines Gear Second AND Gear Third for the first time — 'Gum-Gum... Giant... Jet Shell!!!' — over the crew's warnings that 'your body will burst,' a reckless escalation that blasts shadows out of Moria (pp. 13-14).
  • Captain Lola, leader of the living shadow-victims, has spent 'three long years' on Thriller Bark searching for the zombie carrying her stolen shadow; she and her crew call their shadows by name to pull them home before the dawn disintegrates them (pp. 3, 15-16).
  • Stomped and crushed by Moria, Luffy keeps standing — 'Rubber always bounces back' — articulating his refusal to be 'pounded down' even against a Warlord (pp. 11-12).
  • Luffy's final blow ruptures the over-stuffed giant, forcing every stolen shadow out at once; the shadows fly back to their original owners at daybreak, ending Moria's shadow-army (pp. 17-19).
  • Closing narration frames the future: 'You think things have been tough so far? The real nightmare is waiting in... the New World!!' — pointing past Thriller Bark to the back half of the Grand Line (p. 19).

Summary

Dawn is breaking over Thriller Bark and the zombies scatter for the shade, but Gecko Moria — having gorged on the shadows of all ~1000 zombies on the island — has become a colossus “more powerful than Oars ever was,” gambling that he can simply outlast the sun. Captain Lola, leader of the long-suffering shadow-victims, refuses to hide in the dark any longer. Luffy re-enters Gear Second and hammers the giant with Jet Rocket, Jet Bazooka and Jet Shell; because no mind can govern a thousand shadows, Moria’s grip weakens as he tires and the shadows start leaking out. Moria boxes Luffy in a Black Box and crushes him, lecturing that “nails that stick out are pounded back in” — but Luffy stands up declaring “rubber always bounces back.” Racing the rising sun, Luffy fuses Gear Second and Gear Third into a giant “Jet Shell,” and Lola and the other victims scream for their shadows to come home. The combined assault ruptures the over-stuffed Moria, blasting every shadow out at once to return to its rightful owner at daybreak. A closing line warns that the true nightmare still waits in the New World.
