The seed
Brook spells out the zombies’ weakness and physically hands Robin and Franky a stash of salt : since salt “embodies the power of the ocean,” the corpse and its “fake soul” can no longer maintain a bond — “just put salt in their mouths.” A Chekhov-explicit mechanic introduced exactly when the crew needs a way to fight the otherwise-undefeatable zombies and reclaim their stolen shadows.
The salt weakness is dramatized in Brook ’s five-year-war flashback: a newcomer zombie that ate salted broiled fish is “purified,” and a comrade zombie gulps salt and reacts in terror — confirming that salt (the power of the ocean) severs a corpse from its implanted shadow. Reinforces the Chekhov-explicit weapon the crew will use to reclaim their shadows.
Ch. 470 — pp. 16-17 — Salt Star lands on Oars but “wasn’t enough for his huge body”
The crew weaponizes the planted salt mechanic in battle: Usopp ’s Salt Star (“This should work on zombies!!”) plus Franky ’s Heavy Gong land on Oars — but “it wasn’t enough for his huge body.” The kill-switch is shown to be real but dose-limited against the Number 900 giant, keeping the payoff (full salt-defeat / shadow-return) forward.

Ch. 476 p. 4 — salt weaponized for shadow recovery
The Rolling Pirates reveal they harvest loose shadows by feeding zombies salt to eject the shadow, then catching it by hand — the salt-weakness turned into the victims’ shadow-recovery method.
Ch. 478 — pp. 7-9 — the salt kill-switch is
defeated for the first time
Usopp fires a giant ball of salt into Oars ’s mouth to eject Luffy ’s shadow, but Oars “blocks it from the inside” and flings it back at Usopp, revealing he kept “countermeasures for such an obvious weakness” (pp. 7-9). The supply used was “the last of the salt that Brook got” (p. 9) — the crew’s anti-zombie salt reserve is now spent. Establishes that the planted weakness alone won’t beat Moria ’s masterwork zombie. Jinbei dissolves Gecko Moria ’s summoned zombie soldiers with a wave of seawater , naming the mechanic: “As I recall, your zombies are vulnerable to salt, eh, Moria?” The Chekhov-explicit Thriller Bark weakness recurs on a new battlefield, confirming it as a stable rule of Moria ’s Kage-Kage no Mi zombies. Why this matters
A textbook Oda chekhov-explicit weapon: the means of victory is handed to the heroes (literally, a bag of salt) and explained in plain language well before it is used, so the eventual zombie defeats and shadow-reclamations read as earned payoffs rather than deus ex machina.
