Dr Hogback Vanished Master Surgeon Research Beyond Mankind

The seed
Ch. 444 p. 19 —

Hildon names his master as “Dr. Hogback” and Tony Tony Chopper — himself a doctor — instantly recognises the name, establishing Hogback as a renowned physician before he appears. Paired with Cerberus ’s stitched dog/fox anatomy (pp. 16-18), the seed points to a surgeon behind Thriller Bark’s stitched-together monsters.
Ch. 445 pp. 3-4 — the vanished master surgeon
Hogback is built up as a world-famous master surgeon who “gained all the fame and fortune a doctor can imagine,” saved countless lives with miraculous surgeries, then mysteriously vanished (“went missing or was kidnapped… he just vanished”) and is now rumored to “still be conducting research beyond the scope of mankind” on this very island. The chapter immediately surrounds that build-up with a cemetery of reanimated corpses (pp. 12-18) — seeding that the doctor the trio seek is responsible for the dead walking. He is named and built up here but not yet shown (first on-page appearance Ch. 446 ).
Ch. 446 pp. 7, 9-10 — Hogback confirms the rumor in person
Dr. Hogback debuts on-page and confirms the Ch. 445 rumor himself: he abandoned society precisely to pursue forbidden research — reviving the dead — on this island, calling it “the eternal dream of humanity ” and saying the medical establishment branded the work “madness.” The “research beyond the scope of mankind” is resurrection, spoken from the surgeon’s own mouth.
Ch. 447 pp. 9, 12-18 — the mansion is built of the undead
The “research beyond the scope of mankind” gains shape: Dr. Hogback ’s own mansion is built of the undead. Chopper ’s defended idol is implicated by a “hunch” (p. 9) that he works with the zombies, immediately borne out by a hand reaching out of a wall painting and self-aware reanimated décor (Oinkchuck & co., pp. 12-18). Hogback himself stays off-page (“gone to bed”).
The payoff
Ch. 455 (builds across ~0449-0455, in-window)
Hogback is revealed alive on Thriller Bark as the genius surgeon serving Gecko Moria — his “research beyond the scope of mankind” is exactly the reanimation craft behind the island’s zombies (his hidden laboratory and his reanimated servant Cindry are shown ~0449-0450; his role in the shadow-zombie operation is cemented ~0455). The “vanished famous doctor” is the human face of the Thriller Bark zombie operation, as the cemetery juxtaposition foretold.

Why this matters
Chekhov-explicit naming + dramatic juxtaposition — a key antagonist is named, given a legend (vanished genius doing forbidden research), and physically surrounded by the product of that research (reanimated corpses) chapters before he is shown, so his eventual appearance arrives pre-loaded with meaning. Generalize: when Oda builds a missing/legendary specialist right next to an unexplained phenomenon, the specialist is usually the cause.
