Chapter 118: Someone's Out There

Summary

Dorry (the blue-cloaked giant) is on a rampage, blood-flecked and gasping — his insides are torn up from the bomb-spiked ale he drank in Ch. 117 (page 2). The Strawhats (Vivi, Nami, Sanji, Karoo visible in the scrambling foreground) plead innocence — “We don’t know anything about the exploding ale!!” — but Dorry, reading their service of the ale as their guilt, charges: “You humans dare… to trick the mighty Dorry!!?” (pages 2-3).

Luffy steps up to stop him before Dorry damages himself further. GUM-GUM… ROCKET!!!! — Luffy launches off a tree, body-slams Dorry’s face mid-flight, rebounds with a second Rocket-stretch, and throws Dorry across the jungle, the giant crashing face-first into the dust (pages 4-7). Mid-throw Luffy whispers “Sorry.” — the apology-then-blow combat-grammar (page 6). Dorry, on his knees, gasps the recognition: “So that’s what you are!! Devil Fruit powers!!” — then collapses, blood pooling (“I underestimated you!!!”, page 8) — the first on-page in-universe identification of a Devil Fruit by sight from a veteran pirate in the Alabasta saga.

Luffy, hat pulled low, sweat-streaming (“NOW I’M MAD!!!!”, page 10), reasons out the situation: “My people would never pull a dirty trick like that!! Somebody spiked that ale! It sure wasn’t the other giant!! …The giant was right! There’s somebody else…on this island.” The chapter installs Luffy’s a-priori-trust of his crew’s honor + the somebody-else-on-this-island plot-pivot.

Cut to the jungle (pages 11-13): a giant lizard is biting at a wax-coated dome (“You’re in my way, lizard.”) — then a small voice from above (Miss Goldenweek): “Let me handle this.” — SPLAT!! — the lizard is pancaked flat under a massive wax-platform (10,000 KILL-O-PRESS!!!!). The wax-dome opens to reveal a lounging interior: armchair, teapot, candle-lit study. Inside: Mr. 3 — tall, lanky, dark coat with a prominent 3 insignia, a lit candle on top of his head in place of hair, smoking, dark glasses — and Miss Goldenweek, a small braided-blonde girl in beret-and-cape, lounging asleep on the wax-furniture (ZZZ…). Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine arrive (carried in via the broken wax-wall): “Hey. So you’re back, eh, Mr. 5.” / “Not bad…a quickie house right in the jungle.” / “This is still our mission. So stay out of it.”

Mr. 3 chastises Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine for failing the Whisky Peak Princess-Vivi assignment (“You two are weak.” / “We were just a little careless!! We didn’t know the Princess had pirates guarding her!!”, page 14). Mr. 3 sets the tone — “We’re professionals. To lose to the enemy and leave corpses lying around…is like announcing our existence to the world. We have to execute our missions perfectly.” He offers Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine 30% of the reward if they assist — “And if that’s not acceptable…I’ll kill you both right now.” Reluctant agreement.

The reward, revealed (pages 15-16): Mr. 3 unfurls a 100-year-old wanted poster — DORRY & BROGY, DEAD OR ALIVE — “Once there was a band of giant pirates…who ravaged the seas, burned towns, and terrorized the world. They were called the GIANT PIRATE WARRIOR BAND, and their evil leaders were two legendary monsters… Dorry the Blue and Brogy the Red. And the bounty on their heads back then still holds. They’re alive and kicking on this very island!!! They’re worth 100 million berries each!!! That’s 200 million for the two of them!!!” Mr. 5: “If we complete our mission and bring back heads worth 200 million…we’re sure to be promoted!” (page 17).

Mr. 5 puts it together (page 17): “So that’s why you had us put the bomb in the giant’s ale.” Mr. 3: “That’s right. We wouldn’t stand a chance against them in a fair fight.” — the Officer-Agents-vs-giants is unwinnable in a fair fight combat-doctrine. Closing motto, Mr. 3 slurping tea: “A little creativity…and even the biggest mountain can be made to crumble.”
