The seed

Luffy categorically refuses to entertain that the Strawhats spiked Dorry’s ale even though the surface-evidence (Dorry attacking them in a frenzy, blaming them for the spike) points at the crew. The reasoning is identity-based, not evidence-based — my people would never.

Two simultaneous categorical exclusions:

  1. Excludes the Strawhats as suspects — my people would never pull a dirty trick.
  2. Excludes Brogy as suspect — it sure wasn’t the other giant — Luffy categorically refuses to entertain that an ally-coded pirate (Brogy, who Luffy has just met as Dorry’s honor-bound duel partner) would violate the truce mid-meal.

Why this matters

Installs the captain-trusts-the-crew-categorically combat-grammar. Luffy categorically refuses to entertain that his crew or ally-coded figures would commit dishonor — the trust is identity-based, not evidence-based.

Forward-pattern: every later Luffy I-believe-my-crew-no-matter-what beat re-keys to this Ch. 118 install:

The Ch. 118 install is chronologically the first explicit on-page articulation of the captain-trusts-the-crew-categorically doctrine in dialogue form — the Ch. 0094 YOU’RE ONE OF US NOW moment is the acceptance-counterpart to this Ch. 0118 trust-installer.

Sister-pattern

The Ch. 0118 somebody else on this island deduction is also operationally correct — Mr. 3 + Goldenweek + the returned Mr. 5 + Miss Valentine are on the island, having executed the bomb-in-the-ale plot. Luffy’s identity-based reasoning is vindicated by evidence: not because his crew is incapable of dishonor, but because in this case the actual saboteurs are precisely somebody else on the island. The doctrine’s structural-irony: identity-based trust is right about its core (the Strawhats didn’t spike the ale), even when surface-evidence points the other way.
