Buggy Sunken Treasure Tragedy

The seed
Ch. 19 pages 10-18: Teenage Buggy on the Roger Pirates swallows a stolen treasure map to a 100M-berries sunken fortune. The crew brings back a Devil Fruit. Buggy plans to fake-eat it (swap with a decoy) to keep both his ability to swim and his crew status. Shanks sneaks up to grab a cookie; Buggy gulps in fright and swallows the real fruit; he immediately falls overboard and cannot swim; Shanks saves him. The 100M-berries sunken fortune is now permanently out of reach. Buggy blames Shanks for the rescue: “It was all his fault! He foiled all my grandiose plans!!!” (p.18).
Why this matters
This is the structural template Oda will reuse for every “comic villain has a tragic backstory” reveal in the series: Crocodile’s secret, Doflamingo’s Tenryūbito fall, Mihawk’s forgotten history. Buggy is the first example. The chapter teaches the reader the rule: the comic-relief antagonist has a load-bearing wound. Cross-link Buggy Nose Taboo — the nose-taboo is the comic surface, the sunken-treasure tragedy is the load-bearing wound. Both are seeded in the same arc.
Predicted ongoing payoff
Buggy’s entire later arc (Warlord acceptance, Cross Guild leadership, Yonko classification despite no objective power increase) makes psychological sense as a substitute dream arc: every time he wins social status, it is a partial compensation for the lost 100M-berries dive plan. Cross Guild’s “we are anti-WG mercenaries who answer only to ourselves” framing is a grown-up version of the teenage-Buggy “I’ll put together the cruelest pirate crew ever” moment on Roger’s deck.
