Chapter 527: Level 1: Crimson Hell

Summary

Having stormed into the great underwater prison Impel Down to rescue his brother Ace, Luffy single-handedly defeats five Blugori — the prison’s blue-gorilla guard-beasts — on Level 1 and crosses paths with two escaped prisoners: Buggy the Clown and a bespectacled fellow escapee (Mr. 3). Recognizing the armband Nami gave Luffy as the long-hunted treasure marker for “Bloody” Captain John’s loot, Buggy strikes a deal — he’ll guide Luffy toward Ace in exchange for the band. Buggy explains the prison’s structure: an inverted stack of ever-worse Levels he can only descend as far as Level 4, with rumored lower floors holding “monsters erased from history” where Ace may be kept. Luffy hands over the armband freely, moving the scoundrel Buggy to tears, then impulsively smashes through the walls into Level 1’s punishment zone — the blood-soaked Blade Forest, “Crimson Hell.” The pair ride down through the knife-leafed trees and a prisoner-escape pit that drops them straight into Level 2, the Demonic Beast Floor, where the caged monsters roar with unusual fury.

• Impel Down’s internal architecture (pp. 9–10): the prison is an inverted tower descending underwater through numbered Levels; a cross-section diagram shows Levels 1–5, each lower floor holding more dangerous prisoners. “The uppermost underwater level… is called Level 1. • The armband is Captain John’s treasure marker (pp. 10–12, 18): the band Nami gave Luffy (“Nami gave this to me!”, p. 8) points to “Bloody” Captain John’s loot. “I’ve wanted to get my hands on Captain John’s treasure marker for a long time!” Buggy takes it.
