The seed

Splash-scale reveal of Brook’s tattered ghost ship sliding out of the Florian Triangle fog. A huge “DO…OOM” sound-effect banner arcs across the top of the panel; the ship is framed at a low oblique three-quarter angle, bowsprit thrust up-right, skull-and-crossbones sail dead-center, “Yo ho ho ho” spirit-song drifting around the masts, the hull dissolving into murk at the waterline. Caption: “THERE IT IS!” This is the crew’s first ghost-ship sighting on the road toward Fish-Man Island.

The payoff

The cursed Flying Dutchman of Vander Decken IX looms out of the lightless deep sea under an identical arcing “DO…OM!!” banner. Same low oblique three-quarter framing, bowsprit up-right, skull motif at the masthead, tattered sail (lettered “FLYING DUT[CHMAN]”) dead-center, hull fading into black murk — the deep-sea-darkness analogue of the Florian fog. Caption: ”…Decken! Captain Vander…” It is, again, a cursed ghost ship encountered on the approach route to Fish-Man Island.

Why this matters

Oda keeps a stable visual register for cursed vessels on the Fish-Man Island journey: a derelict ship surfacing from low visibility (fog → abyssal black), shot from the same low 3/4 angle with the skull element centered, announced by a hand-drawn “DOOM” sound-effect spanning the panel top. When a ship enters under that exact “DOOM-banner + emerging-from-murk” composition, read it as a ghost/cursed-vessel cue, not a neutral reveal — and expect it to be plot-load-bearing (Brook/Thriller Bark; Vander Decken/Fish-Man Island). Watch for the same framing on any future haunted or doom-flagged ship.
