The seed
Stated in three escalating forms in Ch. 47:
The Ch. 44 silent feeding of Gin (pages 20-21) and the Ch. 46 feeding of Krieg via Gin (pages 16-17) are the acts; Ch. 47 is the axiom-articulation that retroactively elevates those acts from charity to identity-defining moral rule.
The payoff
(Ongoing — every later Sanji ethics moment is an enactment of this axiom.)
Predicted later instances:
- Drum Island (~Ch. 134-153) — Sanji feeds the starving Luffy after they get separated from the crew.
- Whole Cake Island (Ch. 825-901) — Sanji refuses to abandon Pudding’s heart even as she manipulates him; later, the famous wedding-cake-as-Sanji’s-final-cake-for-Big-Mom.
- Wano Ch. 904 — Sanji’s refusal-to-make-soba-for-the-wrong-customer (the raid suits-and-empty-trays beat), followed by the right-customer payoff.
- Every later instance where Sanji cooks for a defeated enemy / a starving stranger / a person his crew has reason to refuse.
Why this matters
Oda’s character-axiom-establishment technique: a recruitment-arc chapter that includes the character’s identity-line as dialogue. The axiom is declared at the recruitment-arc opening, then never restated as an axiom — every later instance is the axiom in action. Cf. Zoro’s “I’ll be the world’s greatest swordsman” axiom (Ch. 5-6), Luffy’s “King of the Pirates” axiom (Ch. 1), Nami’s “I’ll draw a map of the world” axiom (Ch. 8 — implied). The character-axiom-chapter is a recurring slot in Oda’s recruitment-pattern.
Additionally: Ch. 47 stages the axiom with structural counter-pressure — Sanji declares the axiom while a firing squad of cooks aims at him, and his own master enacts the axiom offstage without quoting it. The chapter is the axiom-establishment chapter for Sanji specifically because the axiom is paired with cost (firing line, K.O. by Patty) and paired with vindication (Zeff’s food-sack on page 18).
