SBS Volume 33
Long Ring Long Land opening SBS. Big canon-leaks: Tashigi’s birthday becomes officially October 6, all of Enel’s special-attack names are sourced from world-mythology lightning-deities (Norse Thor, Iroquois Hino, Japanese Kiten, Australian Mamaragan, Malay Kari…), the Brocken Effect grounds Skypiea’s monster-shadows, and “Heso” is canonized as a Skypiean stock-greeting (not literally “hello”).
Q&A
Chapter 306, Page 26
Q (President of the Friends of ONE PIECE): Oda(T)‘s not here! Oh welll! LET’S START THE SBS! A: Ughh… Adding so many hearts… But it’s soooo cuuuuuteee I’ll forgive youuu.
Q (Hokuto Volume Destroyer): TAKE THIS! ODA!! “USOOOOPP! SPELL!”
- “Black ink spills over your completed manuscript!”
- “All your assistants suddenly couldn’t come to work!”
- “3 blank pages turn up in your finished manuscript after handing it in.” How’s that? A: IT WAS COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE.
Q (Hikari): I tried very hard to count Pandaman in Sky Island arc. 17 times! Am I right? Q (Pandaman No. 2): I searched Volumes 5 to 31 — Pandaman appeared 92 times! A: Well done, all of you. But I can’t tell you the real answer. (← doesn’t remember)
Chapter 308, Page 66
Q (Kiyutaro): If Wapol ate Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Zoro, Chopper, Usopp and Robin, and performed the “Miracle Combination” like Volume 17, what would happen? A: Name: Gargon (randomly picked). [drawing]
Q (Akiu): About the “monsters” in Vol. 32, Chapter 299. At the highest peak of the Harz Mountain ranges in Germany on Mt. Brocken there’s a phenomenon termed the Brocken Effect. Was this what inspired your idea? A: Yes, actually. It’s also known as the Brocken Spectre. It’s caused by the same reason you see in my story, so it can also happen in Japan. Around the head of the shadow you can see a beautiful ring of rainbow light, which is known as a “goraigou”, or “glory” in English.
Chapter 311, Page 126 — Tashigi birthday + Eastern/Western Island songs
Q (Kawagucchi Yuzo): In Volume 28, Luffy sang songs about “Southern Islands” and “Northern Islands”, but are there also songs about Eastern and Western Islands? A (Luffy sings):
“In the Eastern islaaands, the Sun is early to riiiiiisssseee! Gets’em all hyper hyper, its people are foooooolllllsss! In the Western islaaands, the nights are looonnggg! Gets your body itchin for action, its people are fooooollllsss! Aaaaahh, ah ah ahaaaa… that was a yaaaawnnnn! Everyone’s a smiley smiley fooooooooolllll!”
Q (Spicy ☆ Taro): I’d like to know the birthday of our idol, Tashigi-chan. Since she’s so clumsy (toroi), how about October 6 (to = 10, ro = 6)?! Master Chief Petty Officer Tashigi’s birthday is OFFICIALLY OCTOBER 6TH! Anybody got a problem?!
A: Yeah, that’s fine. technique/sbs-leak
Chapter 313, Page 166 — Enel attack-name etymology
Q (Mikan Chips): “CAN LOVE HURRICANES SUDDENLY FORM?!” A: YES. That’s because love can strike at any time to steal your heart away.
Q: About the names of Enel’s special attacks (Goro Goro no Mi). Many seem to originate from Scandinavian gods and Indian spirits. Can you tell us what they all came from?
A: The names came from a variety of sources. technique/sbs-leak
| Attack | Source |
|---|---|
| El Thor | Thor — God of War and Lightning in Norse mythology |
| Hino | Hino — Giant Lightning Bird of the Iroquois natives of North America |
| Kiten | Kiten — Japanese lightning beast |
| Julungul | Jagtjadbulla — One of the Lightning Brothers in Arnhem Land (N. Australia) rock art |
| Mamaragan | Mamaragan — Lightning God of Central Australia |
| Amal | Amaru — A play on “amoru/amakudaru” (to descend from heaven). Japanese lightning-fall |
| Kari | Kari — Lightning God of Malay pygmy tribes |
Also, “Vari” came from the sound of lightning “vari vari”. Not a real word in any language per se.
Chapter 315, Page 206 — “Heso” greeting canonization
Q (Wanko): On page 71 of Volume 30, Conis says, “I have to bring them back!!” and then “Heso!” If “heso” is supposed to mean “hello”, this doesn’t make much sense… A: “Heso” can be thought of as the stock term for all Skypiean greetings. There’s no one word/phrase in Japanese/English that completely corresponds to it. It can mean anything from “good morning”, “good day”, “good evening”, to “how are you feeling”, “goodbye”, “take care”, among others. It really depends on the context. When they say “heso”, you answer “heso”. (Note: “Heso” is Japanese for bellybutton.)
Q: If Tonjit-san was on those stilts for ten years, how did he go to the bathroom?! Please answer in TONJIT-SPEAK. A: IN HIS PAAAAAAAANTS.
Q: SBS! WILL NEVER END! A: NO, IT’S OVER! See you next volume!!
Chapter 317, Page 30 — Question Corner opener (Robin’s Cinco Fleurs gag)
Q (Anonymous, as Robin): “I know you want to start The Question Corner bright and early… But you still haven’t made amends for insulting my Cinco Fleurs in volume 32. You’re terrible… Bad boy. I won’t forgive you. Seis Fleurs… Clutch! CRUNCH!! Cien Fleurs… Delphinium! SNAP!! TEE HEE… And now, let’s begin The Question Corner.” A (Oda): “Oh… Koff…! I will never say that again…! Thud.”
Q (Pandacchio): I was surprised to see Luffy’s six-pack abs. Do you have abs like Luffy too, Oda Sensei? A: Oda jokes his belly forms “three folds” — call it three-pack abs. (“BLUBB.”)
Q (Naoko): Do the Straw Hats ever fall in love? Aren’t there any romantic intrigues on the ship? (Sanji is exempt from this question.) A: “Of course. They’re all in love… with their grand adventure.” (witty)

Notable canon-leaks
- Tashigi’s birthday officially canonized as October 6 (10/6 = “toroi”/clumsy pun) → Tashigi
- Enel’s seven special-attack names are sourced from real-world lightning-deity mythology across Norse, Iroquois, Japanese, Australian Aboriginal, and Malay tradition. Re-keys Enel as a syncretic-lightning-pantheon character, not an original cosmology.
- “Heso” is a Skypiean stock-greeting (covers hello/goodbye/morning/evening etc.), not a literal Japanese “bellybutton” pun. Sky biome linguistic distinction.
- Brocken Spectre real-world phenomenon confirmed as the inspiration for Skypiea’s Ch. 299 shadow-monsters.
SBS reveals (cross-linked)
- Tashigi — Oct 6 birthday now officially canon (toroi-pun gag accepted by Oda).
technique/sbs-leak - Enel — all seven of his named lightning-attacks (Goro Goro no Mi) are sourced from real-world lightning-deity mythology (Norse Thor, Iroquois Hino, Japanese Kiten, Australian Aboriginal Julungul/Mamaragan, Japanese Amal, Malay Kari; “Vari” = onomatopoeia).
