Summary

Cover (p. 1) — HACHI’S WALK ON THE SEAFLOOR, VOL. 8: “A GOLDEN TRIDENT GIVEN IN GRATITUDE” — full-page undersea splash: Hatchan (the octopus-fishman from the Arlong Park arc) stands at the entrance to the GOLDFISH EMPIRE (arched undersea gateway). Crowned goldfish-creatures with shocked/awed expressions approach him; one carries a golden trident for him as a gift. In-story — the Alubarna officer-pair fight set begins. The chapter splits into two simultaneous combat tracks:

Track A — Nami flees, Mr. 1 cuts a stone column vertically; Zoro intercepts (Zoro vs. Mr. 1) (pp. 2-10). Nami runs through Alubarna’s stone-arched streets pursued by Mr. 1 (in dark cloak, 壱/ONE kanji still visible on his chest-tunic). ‘That’s it, I can’t run anymore!!’ / ‘I’ll have to fight!!’ she pants. Mr. 1 silently swings — KROOM!! / KRASH!! — and slices a stone column vertically, the column collapsing toward her. Nami: ‘That stone column… broke vertically?!’. Mr. 1’s blade arrives mid-swing — KLANG!! — Zoro intercepts with both katana drawn (‘Zolo!!’ Nami cries; Zoro: ’!’). Zoro lands behind a smoking dust-cloud; Mr. 1’s cloak ripples. Zoro (sword still up): ‘Meddling… broke? Not likely. …That was the sound of a sword.’ / ‘You cut that with your arm, didn’t you?’ — Zoro reads the arm-blade tell from the sound. Mr. 1 (silent): ’…So…’ — turns, arm-blade visible at his side. Zoro: ‘Quite a weird body you got there.’

Mr. 1 self-articulates as a human sword + recognizes Zoro’s pre-Strawhat Baroque-Works history (pp. 7-8). Mr. 1: ‘You figured it out. Thanks to the Dice-Dice Fruit… I’m a human sword.’ — first on-page Devil Fruit name-utterance. ‘And you’re… the swordsman who took down a hundred men at Whisky Peak. …A few years ago on the East Blue… you also turned down an offer to work for Baroque Works. Mr. 1 launches an arm-blade attack (KLANG!!) — Zoro blocks with crossed katana (‘So what if I am? What’re you?’). Mr. 1’s ideology-taunt: ‘You’re just the swordsman of a little band of no-account pirates… Don’t get cocky with me.’ / ‘…or maybe you’re more like a hollow tin soldier!! You’re a mindless puppet who’s been sold a fantasy world!!’

Doublefinger arrives, the officer-pair splits combat-targets (p. 10). Ms. Doublefinger steps in from above (sun-pendant low-cut top + afro silhouette): ‘Ms. Doublefinger…’ (Mr. 1, recognizing). Doublefinger: ‘You want me to stay out of it… don’t you? Be my guest.’ (smoking). Zoro looks past Mr. 1 toward fleeing Nami: ‘She’s gone… Darn it! Nami!!’. Pre-fight resolve montage (pp. 11-13). Nami panting alone in alley (HUFF… HUFF… R-AAAH… off-panel battle sounds). Flashback insert (pp. 11-12) — Nami requesting a weapon from Usopp (‘Build you a weapon?!’): ‘I don’t want to be a burden to anyone anymore! I want to be able to fight! Doublefinger’s spike-attack ambush (pp. 14-15). Doublefinger leaps high (cloak fluttering) — SHUNK!! — both index fingers extend into stiletto-spikes that pierce the stone tiles under Nami; Nami dodges (?!!! AGH!!) but stumbles. SHUNK!! SHUNK!! SHUNK!! SHUNK!! SHUNK!! / TUNK TUNK TUNK TUNK / KRAK… — sequential spike-strikes pin stone columns; one stone arch collapses (KROOSH!!). Doublefinger (laughing): ‘It’s no use, little girl.’ / ‘No matter where you run, no matter where you hide.’ Nami (panting against rubble): ‘Was that some sort of spear, or is this one of those powers?’

Toge Toge no Mi self-articulation (p. 16). Doublefinger reveals the spike-fruit: ‘Have you figured it out? I’m a human spike. I ate the Spike-Spike Fruit. I can produce spikes from any part of my body.’ — first on-page utterance of the Spike-Spike Fruit (Toge Toge no Mi). Nami’s interior-thought: ‘She wants to make a human pincushion out of me. Spikes that can pierce stone walls like they were cardboard!!’ Nami (resolute, KA-CHAK!! unfolding the Climate Baton): ‘I’ll fight you!! And I might even win!!’ Doublefinger (amused): ‘Are you going to fight me? Oh?’ — WHAP — Doublefinger shows three spike-fingers from her own hand.

Climate Baton combat-debut + failure-mode (pp. 17-19). Nami (assembling the baton, CHAK! CHAK!): ‘Usopp, I’m counting on you!!’ / ‘The Climate Baton!! Get a taste of my new weapon!!’ / ‘Once in position, this miraculous baton can cause extraordinary changes in the weather!! It can summon the clouds! It can make rain!! Nami tries the next setting (p. 19, CHAK… WOOOOO…): ‘According to the instructions, this is a rifle.’ / ‘No! I have to trust him!’ — KA-CHAK!! / BOOM!! ‘Cloudy Tempo!!’ — Doublefinger advancing: ‘It’s all over for you now!’ — Nami: ‘This is more like it!!’ — POOF! — instead of clouds, flowers burst from the baton-tip (‘What pretty flowers!’ Doublefinger, deadpan, then HEE HEE HEE…; Nami: ‘Oh!!’). The agents of Baroque Works all have their own favorite teas. For example, Mr. 3 likes Earl Grey, Ms. Golden Week likes green tea, Mr. 5 prefers gunpowder tea, and Ms. Valentine likes lemon tea. They’re always drinking tea in various situations. Then in Vol. 19, page 15, panel 5, there’s a person like this (→right). Are these two the same person?’ Oda: ‘Yes, they’re the same person! If you look closely at the rebel forces, you’ll find a number of members of the old Sand-Sand Band. Very perceptive of you to notice.’ Oda includes a comparison strip: Vol. 18, chapter 164, page 169: Sand-Sand Band → 11 years later → Vol. 19, chapter 167, page 15 + Vol. 19, chapter 172, page 114. Open questions raised

• Will the Climate Baton ever produce actual weather? Nami’s how can I win with this thing?! (p. 19) sets up the forward-canon weapon-development arc. Forward-canon: the Clima-Tact upgrade (Skypiea-arc Usopp + Nami collaboration → Sorcery Clima-Tact post-Enies Lobby) will activate the true weather-attack mechanism.
• Why does the Climate Baton produce magic-trick gag-payloads? The exposition explicitly says the weapon can summon clouds, rain, and wind — yet on first deployment it produces pigeons and flowers. Is this an Usopp-as-prankster sabotage (he built it as a joke), or is the weather-mechanism untested-and-Nami-doesn’t-know-how-to-trigger-it? The according to the instructions, this is a rifle line suggests Usopp gave incomplete instructions; forward-canon Nami-learns-to-attack training-arc.
• How does Mr. 1 know Zoro killed Mr. 7? Mr. 7’s death has not been on-page; the Ch. 0155 roster-debut showed him alive (or at least face-canonized). The Mr. 1 cross-officer recognition implies BW has internal records tracking Officer-Agent-and-below mortality. Forward-canon: Mr. 7 was killed off-page in East Blue years before.
• Who recruited Zoro for Baroque Works? What was the agent’s identity? Zoro’s I told your agent… I’d join if I could be the boss. Instead of agreeing to my demand he attacked me, so I dealt with him implies a specific BW-recruiter character. Was it Mr. 7? (The chronology fits — if Mr. 7 was the recruiter who attacked Zoro after the be the boss counter-demand, then Zoro killed Mr. 7 in self-defense and the roster-debut became posthumous.) The chapter does not explicitly identify the agent.
• Will Zoro ever lose the only Luffy is my boss exception? The I’d join if I could be the boss / I’m not interested in being the boss anymore / only an idiot would want that job (p. 8) implies Zoro’s no-one-is-my-boss doctrine has a Luffy-shaped exception (he is in fact a subordinate in Luffy’s pirate crew). Forward-canon: Zoro’s swordsman of the Pirate King register reaffirms the Luffy-exception permanently.
• What is the fantasy world Mr. 1 references? You’re a mindless puppet who’s been sold a fantasy world (p. 9) — Mr. 1’s BW-officer-tier worldview rejects pirate-aspiration as fantasy. What is the BW-officer-tier reality in contrast? Forward-canon: Crocodile’s actual Utopia kingdom-conquest is itself the fantasy.
• What is the Goldfish Empire in Hatchan’s cover-story? The cover-Vol-8 setting is a Goldfish-Empire undersea kingdom. Forward-canon: Hatchan’s cover-story arc has him traveling underwater civilizations as a redemption-pilgrimage. The Goldfish Empire is a one-installment-only setting most likely; the broader cover-arc trajectory leads to Hatchan’s Sabaody-arc takoyaki-stand reformed-identity.
• Will Sand-Sand Band SBS-reveal pay off on-page? Oda’s SBS confirms the rebel forces contain aged-up Sand-Sand Band members — but the rebels have not yet been on-page-identified by name as such (the rebel-army has been a faceless mass).
