Why this matters
The I’d join if I could be the boss doctrine retroactively contextualizes Zoro’s pre-Strawhat operational stance: he refuses to subordinate to any criminal org or any boss who isn’t himself. The doctrine attenuates post-Strawhat into a structural Luffy-exception — Zoro will subordinate to no one except Luffy. The exception is itself the deepest character-canonization: Luffy is the only person Zoro can serve without compromising his swordsman-ethic.
Pre-loads Zoro’s forward-canon Mihawk-vow doctrine (I’ll never lose again, until I defeat him for you) — the same vow-grammar applied at the World’s Greatest Swordsman tier. The Luffy-exception doctrine is operationally what makes Zoro the first-mate.
