Chapter 1098: Bonney's Birth

Summary

The Kuma flashback continues (deep past). At Baltigo, the Revolutionary Army receives word that Ginny — captured at the close of Ch. 1097 — was taken on a government ship and made a Celestial Dragon’s wife; a despondent Kuma is held back from a rescue. Roughly two years later Ginny calls home: she “got sick,” her captor “dumped her off,” and she is returning to “the lower world” only to say goodbye, carrying an infant girl, Bonney. Kuma races to the Sorbet church to find Ginny dead — her body turned blue and hard as stone after she crossed the sea by day in the sunlight to deliver the baby safely. Kuma vows to raise her daughter, and the village helps him bring up baby Bonney, who calls him “Daddy.” Bonney soon shows a blue stone beneath her eye — she has caught the same disease, named Sapphire Scales: natural light spreads the crystallizing stone, it is incurable and fatal, and the doctor gives her about five years (“she won’t see her tenth birthday”). Kuma quits the Revolutionary Army to be with her and lies that she will be cured at age ten, so she dreams of one day travelling to the sky islands, Fish-Man Island, and finding Nika. One year later the nightmare returns: King Bekori resumes his slaughter-and-enslavement of Sorbet’s poor, and the villagers beg Kuma to help.

• Bonney is Ginny’s biological daughter. Her biological father is the unnamed Celestial Dragon who abducted Ginny and “made her his wife” (pp. 2–4). Bonney therefore carries Celestial-Dragon blood.
• Ginny’s fate after capture: taken on a government ship to be a Celestial Dragon’s wife, she contracted Sapphire Scales, was “dumped off,” and returned to Sorbet only to die — her skin turned blue and stone-hard from crossing the sea by daylight to save baby Bonney (pp. 3–6).
• Kuma adopts Bonney. He vows “I’ll raise your daughter” over Ginny’s deathbed and buries her at the Sorbet church (pp. 6–7); Bonney calls him “Daddy” (p. 8).
• Sapphire Scales disease, named and explained (p. 13): exposure to natural light — sunlight, moonlight — causes a blue stone to form and spread; even if the cause is blocked it spreads over time; only a few cases in recent memory; incurable. Distinct from “White Lead disease” (Amber Lead Syndrome, p. 10).
• Bonney inherited the disease (blue stone below her eye, p. 10). A doctor: she has roughly five years, “won’t see her tenth birthday,” no known cure (p. 14).
• Kuma quit the Revolutionary Army to be with Bonney; Dragon accepts it (“We’ll ask every doctor in the world that we can,” p. 10).
• Kuma lies to Bonney that she will be cured when she turns ten, sustaining her hope (pp. 14–15).
• The nightmare returns: one year later King Bekori resumes the enslavement/slaughter of Sorbet’s poor (“16 years ago, all over again”), and villagers beg Kuma to intervene (p. 15).
