Profile
Owner of Matsu Sword Shop in Roguetown — a 200-year-business weapons-merchant (“Old swords, newer swords, and brand-new swords, we have ‘em all… and a solid reputation of over 200 years in the business!”). Balding-cued, mustachioed, flat-top haircut, vest. The Zoro-sword-replacement-kit-acquisition-site (Ch. 97).
Arc-by-arc updates
Loguetown (Ch. 97)
- Negotiates with Zoro over Wado Ichimonji — attempts to lowball; escalates bid to 650,000 berries when he realizes its value; ultimately fails to buy (Zoro: “This sword isn’t for sale at any price.”).
- Refuses to let Zoro buy Kitetsu III on grounds of the curse. Articulates the Kitetsu curse doctrine (page 14): “The first Kitetsu and its successors are good blades, but they’re all cursed!! Famous swordsmen have died tragic deaths because they wielded the Kitetsu swords. These days, no swordsman in the world uses a Kitetsu… and if he did, he wouldn’t be around long.”
- Articulates the shop-as-Loguetown-economy-indicator doctrine (page 11): “This shop used to be filled with men who wanted to sail the Grand Line. Then that monster [Smoker] took over this town. And what happened? The customers stopped coming.”
- Witnesses Zoro’s luck-vs-curse arm-bet (pages 15-16): “OH!!!! THAT BLADE’S RAZOR SHARP!!!”
- Gifts Zoro a second high-grade sword off-panel in tribute to Zoro’s luck-vs-curse demonstration (per his wife, page 16: “Imagine a miser like you giving away your shop’s treasures.”). The second sword (Yubashiri-pending-naming) is Ch. 98 forward-canonical.
Notes
- Wife (page 16): unnamed paratext-cameo. Collapses on-page (“I- I can’t get up.”); Matsu (raging): “Yes, dear!!! Go clean the bathroom!!” — comedy cooldown-beat.
