The seed
Kuina’s sword is handed off to Zoro by Koushirou in Ch. 5 (“Humans are fragile things, Zoro…”). The sword is unnamed on-page for 92 chapters — through the Buggy arc, Syrup Village arc, Baratie arc, and Arlong arc — despite being the load-bearing weapon-half of the Zoro-Kuina promise. Each appearance is structurally important (Onigiri Ch. 17 — first named santoryu with Wado in the mouth; Three Thousand Worlds Ch. 51 — Wado survives the Mihawk-duel clash while the other two katanas shatter) but never named.
The payoff
Structural irony
The naming is delivered by Tashigi — the Kuina-look-alike Marine (Ch. 96 visual-debut). The chapter pairs the Kuina-face-on-a-living-Marine visual with the Kuina-sword-named-by-that-Marine textual payoff — Kuina’s likeness names Kuina’s sword. Zoro neither corrects her on his identity nor confirms that this is Kuina’s sword; the Kuina-Wado-Tashigi triangulation is operational on-page from this chapter forward.
Etymology
- Wado (和道) = path of peace / Japan road
- Ichimonji (一文字) = single horizontal stroke / one-character (referring to the blade’s hamon line)
The name encodes peaceful path — semantically inverted against its life-and-death use as Zoro’s promise-anchor and his Mihawk-duel survivor-blade. The Straight Road of Peace line is also the name’s literal-meaning translation in-text.
Why this matters
The chapter resolves the vault’s longest-running prop-naming-uncertainty. Every later Wado-reference is operationally retroactive — from Ch. 5 forward, the sword in Zoro’s mouth has always been the Wado Ichimonji, one of the 21 Great-Grade swords, worth 10M berries.
The Wano-arc Shimotsuki-family lineage payoff (Koushirou’s blade-family) is set up by this naming — the Wado (和) kanji is the Japan / harmony kanji that the Shimotsuki-family-as-Wano-emigrants reveal at Wano makes retroactively load-bearing. Forward-pattern: every later Wado-reference (Thriller Bark Asura wielding Wado, Wano Enma-Wado-bonding, the Wado-blackening speculative endgame) traces back to this Ch. 97 naming.
