Ch. 97 introduces the Kitetsu graded cursed-sword lineage in one chapter:
- Kitetsu I (Supreme Grade, cursed)
- Kitetsu II (Excellent Grade, cursed)
- Kitetsu III / Sandai Kitetsu (Fine Grade, cursed, worth 1M berries)
Matsu (page 14): “The first Kitetsu and its successors are good blades, but they’re all cursed!! Famous swordsmen have died tragic deaths because they wielded the Kitetsu swords. These days, no swordsman in the world uses a Kitetsu… and if he did, he wouldn’t be around long.”

Etymology / name-leak
- Kitetsu (鬼徹) = demon-piercer / demon-through. The demon (鬼 oni) kanji is the same as in Onigiri (Zoro’s first named santoryu attack, Ch. 17) — the demon-grammar that Wado bonded to in the mouth (Ch. 17) now extends to the demon-grammar-in-the-sword-name with Kitetsu.
- Sandai (三代) = third generation; Sandai Kitetsu = Third-Generation Demon-Piercer.
The chapter’s title is the western-romanized form (Kitetsu III) — emphasizes the graded-lineage-of-cursed-blades world-feature.
What this seeds
- Cursed-sword (妖刀 yōtō) as canonical world-category. First on-page introduction. Recurring forward: Wano’s Nidai Kitetsu (Kitetsu II, in Tenguyama Hitetsu’s possession) re-deploys the lineage; Yubashiri’s eventual Shu rust-fruit destruction at Enies Lobby is kismet-by-cursed-context.
- Zoro’s-luck-as-operational-combat-resource. The luck-vs-curse bet’s I’m-not-cursed result canonizes Zoro’s luck as a load-bearing combat-resource alongside skill and willpower. Forward-pattern: every later Zoro-survives-impossible-odds beat (Bartholomew-Kuma-removes-all-Luffy’s-fatigue-into-Zoro Thriller Bark; Wano king-of-hell triple-near-death survival) re-keys to this Ch. 97 install.
- Sword-as-sentient-judge-of-the-wielder register. The Kitetsu chooses whether to cut Zoro — the sword has agency. Pre-loads the Enma-pulls-Zoro’s-haki-out-on-its-own-volition Wano-arc beat.
