Ch. 1035 p. 9 — Enma’s life-drain voiced mid-duel with King
With the duel against King dragging on, Zoro states the blade will drain him if he can’t finish quickly — “If this drags on, the sword will suck the life from me!! I don’t have much time…” Reaffirms Enma’s life/energy drain pressuring Zoro to land a decisive strike fast; the permanent-black-blade milestone remains forward.
Ch. 1033 — pp. 3, 7, 16 — Enma’s drain is now actively endangering Zoro mid-fight
Enma forcibly pulls Zoro ’s Armament Haki on its own (the black bird-flame, p. 3), leaving him “held back by his own sword” (p. 7). Zoro states the drain “will kill me” at this rate and openly poses the control problem — “How should I stabilize my Haki…?!” — the unsolved step before blackening the blade. He recognizes “a sword is honest… it was my strength that was lacking; you were light as a feather when Oden wielded you” (p. 16). Seed stays pending/forward.
Ch. 1032 p. 16 — Enma flares against King
Mid-duel with King , with the enemy still unsolved, Enma surges (“ENMA IS—!!”) into a sudden bloom of force. Another beat in Oden’s blade drawing more out of its wielder; the not-yet-black-blade status remains a forward axis. (Held pending — the permanent-black-blade milestone is forward.)
Ch. 1003 — Enma channels the “strange Haki” that wounds Kaido
On the rooftop the Beasts crowd asks “Is that katana the source of that strange Haki?!” (p. 10) as Zoro cuts Kaido with Enma — on-page confirmation that the blade’s Ryuo-drawing/Haki-exuding property is what lets Zoro pierce the dragon’s “invincible” hide. Enma manifests Oden-like flame in combat against Kaido — the blade is channeling power beyond an ordinary cut (“That’s no ordinary sword!!!”), but it is still not a black blade and Zoro laments he “missed.” Continues the rising-rank seed. Why this matters
A chekhov-explicit seed: a master smith names, out loud, the exact upgrade-path the protagonist’s new weapon can take (“not yet a black blade… its rank might yet be raised”), and the blade itself demonstrates a dangerous, growth-forcing property (draining the wielder’s Ryuo). Oda stating the milestone aloud while handing the hero the prop is a reliable tell that the milestone will be reached.
