A chained variant of the Oars “villain-as-mountain” colossus lineage — with the lineage’s defeat-condition (chains/broken form) flipped to the opening state.
What it is
Loki’s first on-page appearance is staged as a deliberate re-key of the splash grammar Oda installed when Oars is unveiled in the Special Hall Freezer at Thriller Bark. Both reveals share the same near-full-page beats:
- a colossal horned, grinning, sharp-toothed giant dominating the frame;
- the body wrapped in oversized, dominant CHAINS — the chains are the loudest texture on the page;
- a lone tiny human dropped to the base of the frame purely for scale (the Straw Hats / Luffy below; Luffy a silhouette at Elbaf);
- a top-of-frame DOOM-register SFX (Oars’s “KLAK…” cold-freezer clank → Loki’s ドォン “DOOM” blocks);
- the reveal closing on the giant’s proper NAME shouted huge in display lettering — “OARS!!!!” → “LOKI!!!”;
- both giants explicitly framed as the ancient “Beast” / destroyer, dormant for an era and now reawakening.
The grammar states the chapter’s thesis visually, before the dialogue lands: an unwinnable-by-scale colossus has entered the stage.
The seed (the Oars Beast-in-chains install)

The unbinding fires (Ch 1141 p. 16)
Ch. 1141 p. 16 — Loki rises, sea-prism chains snapping, a tiny lone swordsman (Zoro) at the base. The chained-colossus splash re-keyed into its unbinding register — the predicted countdown firing on-page. :::

The mirror (shared invariants)

The deliberate variation is state: Oars is a reanimated corpse strapped to be unleashed; Loki is a living prince kept bound. The card — chained horned colossus + tiny figure for scale + DOOM-header + name-shout — is reused near-identically.
Why this matters — the structural lesson
In the Oars “villain-as-mountain” lineage the colossus is the “you cannot out-scale this — break the composition” tell, and is defeated by chaining/breaking the form: Oars is frozen solid and his S-curved spine chained straight; Moria’s re-key is overloaded; Pica’s stone form is broken (see Pica Stone-Colossus Splash Re-Keys The Oars Villain-As-Mountain Grammar and Oars Full-Figure DOOM-Splash Refuses To Stay Down Composition). Loki is the first colossus in the lineage introduced already in that chained/broken state — the page that, on Oars, marks the end of the threat is, on Loki, the beginning of it. The chains are not a victory; they are a countdown. The prophecy spells out the inversion in words — “the next time that Loki, the accursed prince, is unleashed, the world will be brought to ruin” — so the watch-for runs opposite to the lineage: when Oda re-keys the colossus splash onto a figure shown pre-chained, the unbinding (not the subduing) is the coming danger. Norse-Loki bound until Ragnarök is the fairy-tale overlay (see Loki Bound In Chains Echoes Norse Ragnarok Prophecy); the visual lineage names the structural stakes.
