- Etymology (researched @0999): romaji Uo Uo no Mi (魚魚の実); uo (魚) is Japanese for “fish,” which VIZ renders as the doubled “Fish-Fish Fruit.” The deliberate naming irony — a fish fruit that grants a dragon form — encodes the East Asian (Chinese) myth of the carp ascending the Dragon Gate (登竜門, tōryūmon): a koi that leaps the waterfall on the Yellow River is transformed into a dragon, so Kaido’s azure-dragon form is mythologically “a fish that became a dragon.” This explains why the only fruit (besides Momonosuke’s artificial copy) that turns the user into a true dragon is named after fish rather than dragons (cf. the dinosaur Ryu Ryu no Mi line).
