Iron Mask Duval Hides A Grudge Against A Straw Hat
Status: pending · Technique: prop-tell · negative-space
The seed
Duval , boss of the Flying Fish Riders , “wears an iron mask no one has ever seen him without” (p. 15) and has been stopping every ship in these waters to find one person. The chapter ends with him recognizing the Straw Hat ship as belonging to “the man who destroyed my life” and vowing to kill him (pp. 18-19) — but both his face and the source of his grudge are withheld.
Name-etymology tell — the epithet itself encodes the reveal
Duval’s epithet “Iron Mask Duval” (鉄仮面のデュバル) plus the French surname Duval (“of the valley,” du val ) point at “The Man in the Iron Mask” (L’Homme au Masque de Fer ) — the Dumas / French-royalty legend of a prisoner whose iron mask conceals a face that is the identical double of a famous man . The name pre-announces the payoff: under the mask, Duval’s face is the exact likeness of Sanji ’s wanted-poster sketch (whose French combat vocabulary — incl. the Parage Shot that “rearranges” Duval’s face — Oda has tied to Sanji being French in the real world). Filed technique/name-etymology. See Duval etymology:.
Duval’s full on-page intro restates the grudge: he names a target aboard the Straw Hat ship who “ruined mah whole life” and feels it “like a scar in the middle of mah back,” vowing to kill the man “by my own hand” (pp. 4-7). The iron mask — now shown with bull-like horns — and the man’s identity remain hidden; the prop-tell + negative-space hold. Status kept pending (the reveal lands forward of this chapter).
At the chapter’s cliffhanger the masked, horned boss of the Flying Fish Riders looms over Luffy and says, “You know me… don’t you?” Luffy reacts as if recognizing the face — “Uh-oh! It’s you!!” — but the identity and grudge are deliberately withheld (the chapter title is literally “You Know Me”). The masked-boss prop + recognition dialogue restate the concealed-identity tell; the unmasking/grudge explanation lands forward in this arc. Status kept pending (the payoff is forward of this chapter).
The payoff
(Forward — the reveal of whose life he claims was destroyed, and what his face looks like, lands on-page later in this arc.)

Why this matters
An always-masked villain hunting a specific Straw Hat is a textbook concealed-identity prop-tell: the chapter deliberately leaves the face hidden and the grievance unnamed. Filed pending — the reveal is the obvious payoff, on-page later in this arc.
