Chapter 246: Satori, Vassal

Summary

The chapter opens on the four priests’ voices intoning Enel’s doctrine over portraits of grim masked figures — “They have no respect for the Kami… A class-2 criminal offense… Let’s give them the challenge… Guilt is to live… There is no peace to be found in the heavens” (page 3). At the four-mouthed entrance to Upper Yard, the Straw Hats face the choice of four ordeals — Challenge of the Ball / String / Iron / Swamp — and “can only choose one”; Luffy picks Ball (“It sounds the most harmless”), and the cloud-boat (the Going Merry) is swept screaming up the Milky Road into the forest (pages 4–7). Inside the Forest of No Return, the path is choked with giant floating balls of island cloud (“surprise clouds”), each potentially booby-trapped — Usopp dubs them “snake nests,” and the crew is repeatedly ambushed by traps (the Sky Cracker, a snake, explosions) sprung by an unseen “Ho ho ho!” tormentor (pages 8–11). The prankster reveals himself: Satori, “Kami’s Vassal” / “of the Forest,” a rotund, bearded, winged priest who congratulates them for choosing his Challenge of the Ball and declares they must defeat him to leave alive (pages 12–13). Luffy attacks with Gum-Gum Pistol — but Satori anticipates the move before it arrives, dodging cleanly: “That’s impossible! He anticipated my move!” Sanji’s kick fares no better. Satori names the faculty: “Mantra is a power granted only to the faithful.” A single light-looking blow from Satori (Collier, “head kick, right leg”) fells Sanji and Usopp — “There’s nothing simple about it. It destroys the body… starting with the spinal cord!” (pages 14–17). With Sanji and Usopp down, Satori introduces himself fully — “My name is Satori!! I’m one of the vassals that serve the omnipotent Kami Eneru!! I rule over the Varse in the Forest of No Return” — and explains the lethal logic of the ordeal: their boat roams the Milky Road until it finds the only exit, the surprise clouds will not let them ride it freely, and “only ten percent survive the Forest of No Return!” — “Welcome to the forbidden sacred land, the Upper Yard” (pages 18–19).

New reveals

• The four entrances = four Ordeals. Signs over the entrance read Challenge of the Ball / Challenge of the String / Challenge of the Iron / Challenge of the Swamp (page 4); the crew “can only choose one,” and chooses Ball.
• “Kami has four vassals.” Robin (or Nami) reasons that each of the four entrances leads to one of Enel’s four vassals (page 9): “Kami has four vassals.” Structural confirmation of the four Priests of Skypiea.
• Satori, “Kami’s Vassal” / “of the Forest” (caption, page 12) is the priest of the Challenge of the Ball. He “rules over the Varse in the Forest of No Return” (page 18) and serves “the omnipotent Kami Eneru” — first on-page spelling of Eneru/Enel in this chapter (page 18).
• Mantra is named on-page for the first time (page 16): “Mantra is a power granted only to the faithful.” It lets Satori sense/anticipate an attack before it lands (he dodges Luffy’s Gum-Gum Pistol; Luffy: “He anticipated my move!”). See the Observation-Haki precursor seed below.
• The “balls” / surprise clouds are booby-trapped. Made of island cloud, they conceal traps — the Sky Cracker (page 9), a snake (page 10), explosives (page 11): “They’re surprise clouds. You never know what’s inside them! These balls are booby-trapped!!”
• Satori’s blow destroys the body “starting with the spinal cord.” His seemingly “simple” Collier (head kick, right leg) drops Sanji and Usopp in one hit (pages 16–17).
• The ordeal’s win condition. The boat drifts the Milky Road until it reaches the only exit; the surprise clouds won’t let the crew board it freely; the sacrificial altar offerings can only be reached by boat; only ~10% survive (pages 18–19).
