Chapter 1029: The Tower

Summary
Three Onigashima fights run in parallel. On the second floor, Sanji breaks Queen’s sword with his bare neck and starts deflecting gunfire — his dormant Vinsmoke exoskeleton is emerging, and a gleeful Queen recites Judge’s catalog of Germa body-modifications while Sanji panics that he is “losing his humanity.” On the Live Floor, a recovered Big Mom shrugs off her migraine, calls on Hera and Napoleon, and hammers a battered Kid with “Counter Shock” and “Mama-raid”; Kid clings on, having “finally reached the Four Emperors.” On the third floor, Killer — laughing uncontrollably from his SMILE fruit — fights Basil Hawkins, who holds Kid’s straw doll and sends every wound straight to Kid. Killer reasons out the flaw: a wound with no matching conduit (Kid’s missing left arm) rebounds onto Hawkins. Killer severs Hawkins’s left arm, destroys his straw-man, and finishes him with Spin & Sonic. Freed from the damage-link, Kid’s body lightens — “The Tower” card’s meaning, “a new way forward” — and he tells his partner to get going.

- Sanji’s exoskeleton is activating. Sanji broke Queen’s sword with his neck “just now” with no Haki, and Beasts mooks’ bullets/harpoons bounce off him (p. 2–4). Sanji is horrified — “What’s happening to my body?! …to lose my humanity?!”
- Hawkins’s damage-transfer rule fully stated. “All of the damage I take goes straight to Kid, as long as I hold his straw doll within my body!!!” — but it requires a matching conduit; a wound to a part Kid lacks has nowhere to go (p. 11–13).
- Kid’s missing left arm is a tactical asset. Killer severs Hawkins’s left arm; the damage can’t transfer because “Kid has… no left arm!!!”, so Hawkins takes it himself (p. 12–13).
- Hawkins’s spare “lives” live in a straw-man. Killer destroys it; Hawkins insists it “will come back to life, as the cards dictate,” but Spin & Sonic still drops him (p. 14–16).
- “The Tower” symbolism. Card meaning = “the collapse of the old and brittle”; hidden meaning = “a new way forward.” With Hawkins down, Kid is no longer the damage-sink and his body feels “much lighter” (p. 17).
