Ch. 1023 — pp. 5–7 — “all human,” yet the body is changing
Sanji reaffirms “I’m all human!!!” against Queen’s cyborg/Lunarian taunt — while admitting his body has “felt a little off… ever since the second time I put on the raid suit” (p. 5). The Germa scientists report that Sanji alone failed to develop an exoskeleton and “is nothing but a human ” — keeping ordinary emotions where his siblings became feeling-suppressed weapons. Judge frames this as the reason Sanji is “the failure,” and disowns him. Explicitly singled out and load-bearing — the kind of “the one who came out wrong” install that tends to invert into strength.

Sanji confirms in monologue that his body “has developed to the exoskeleton ,” his legs now tougher and able to channel even hotter flames — exoskeleton, muscle, and speed increasing his strength. The Germa scientists’ “he alone failed to develop an exoskeleton / nothing but a human” verdict (Ch. 840 ) inverts: the modification was dormant, not absent , surfacing under combat stress. Why this matters
A chekhov-explicit “the failed one” install: Oda has the antagonist-father label the protagonist’s friend a defective product for retaining his humanity — a framing the narrative is built to overturn (humanity-as-strength). When a One Piece character is explicitly branded the lone “failure” of an engineered set, test for a later reversal that makes the “defect” decisive.
