Later echo — the same power registers Luffy’s anomalous fate
Hawkins reads the cards on the post-war and is unsettled: “Straw Hat Luffy’s survival rate won’t go
to zero… no matter what I do.” His fortune-telling registers Luffy’s fate as anomalously
protected against Hawkins’s own agency — an echo of his confirmed “I will not die” survival power,
now turned outward on Luffy and pre-loading his later fate-binding to the Straw Hat.
In the New World, Hawkins reads the imitator pirate Brownbeard ’s fortune from his cards — “I hate jokes… the shadow of death is on your face today” — counting down (“Two…”) before striking. Another on-page demonstration of the same card-divination/probability power that enforces his “I will not die” certainty, here turned outward to foretell another’s death.
The survival power is finally NAMED and fully explained : Hawkins’s “Straw-Straw powers ” (Wara Wara no Mi ) infuse his subordinates’ spirits into straw stand-in dolls , so damage is redirected onto them — “minus one life,” up to ten stored lives.
