Joy Boy - name foreshadows Drums of Liberation Caribbean folklore figure

The seed
Joy Boy is the literal transliteration of English joyboy. From at least Ch. 628 (the Poneglyph apology on Fishman Island), the figure has been treated by the narrative as a singular legendary D-line predecessor to Luffy. But the specific folkloric template has been hiding in the name since the first mention.
In Michael Page & Robert Ingpen’s The Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were (Dragon’s World / Viking, 1985 — a well-known reference work for Oda-style mythologies), the entry ‘Joyboy’ describes a figure from Caribbean folklore brought to the islands with the West African slave trade, who:
- smiles at all the world’s problems,
- cures the ills of humanity by playing his drum,
- and whoever hears his music is forced to dance and sing until they cast off the black veil of despair.
This is, in 1985-encyclopedia form, an exact pre-statement of:
- Gear 5 / Joy Boy form’s smiling-warrior aesthetic (Ch. 1043-1044)
- The Drums of Liberation — Luffy’s heartbeat turns into a drumbeat upon awakening (Ch. 1042-1044)
- The ‘Warrior of Liberation’ epithet assigned by the Five Elders to the Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika
- The forced-dance / cast-off-despair frame of Joy Boy’s promise to the oppressed (Fishman Island, Slave-Era Mariejois)
The payoff
The provenance of the source folklore (Caribbean / formerly-enslaved-people) is itself foreshadowing-rich: Joy Boy’s promise to Fishman Island (a people the Great Kingdom failed to liberate) and the Mariejois-slave-rescue motif (cf. Ginny / Bonney / Kuma arcs) reproduce the source folklore’s liberation-of-enslaved-peoples frame.

The Caribbean-folklore source was surfaced by JP and EN deep-cut etymology communities once the Drums of Liberation panel hit. @TheWillOfMarco’s One Piece Trivia post is one widely-shared English-language surfacing; the Spanish-language outlet Vida Extra covered the African-tribe / source-folklore parallel in long-form. The English-encyclopedia trace dates the encoding to at least 1985 — predating One Piece by 12+ years.
Why this matters
Joy Boy is the cleanest ‘name-as-spoiler’ encoding in the entire manga: the title itself names the function and the source-myth template, and the source-myth template predicts the eventual mechanical reveals (Drums = drum-cure; smile = smiling-warrior; liberation = liberation-warrior). When you find a One Piece name that reads cleanly as a real-world title rather than as a personal name (Joy Boy; Iron Giant Emet; Sun God Nika; Warrior of Liberation), the real-world entry is the spoiler-sheet — read it first. This is the cardinal example.
