The theory ties the two oldest surviving mysteries of the era into a single relationship.

It began as speculation on the Arlong Park / Orojackson forums and r/OnePiece after the Zou arc revealed Zunisha’s sentient “crime / only-allowed-to-walk” sentence in 2016; those threads debated who punished it and why. Oda’s Ch. 1040 “a companion of Joyboy” line (2022) converted it from fan theory to near-canon scaffolding, and explainer outlets (CBR, ScreenRant) then packaged the “crewmate / faction-member” framing for the wider audience via YouTube breakdowns.

The steelman

The strongest honest version rests on an unusual density of direct on-page confirmation rather than pure speculation. Zunisha is a living, sentient, roughly millennium-old creature that personally knew Joy Boy: at Onigashima it hears Luffy’s restarting heartbeat as “the drums of liberation” and cries “Joy-Boy… has returned!!!” for the first time in 800 years (Ch. 1043), then weeps in private recognition of the same rhythm (“Oh, Joyboy… how long it’s been,” Ch. 1046). Via Momonosuke relaying Oden’s knowledge, Zunisha names itself “a companion of Joyboy” who committed a crime 800 years ago — dating its sentence squarely to the Void Century and attaching it to the Joy Boy legend (Ch. 1040). This is not a distant acquaintance: it recognizes his rhythm on sight, weeps at his return, and remembers him with personal grief.

Combined with its ancient sentence — “it committed a crime, and ever since it has only been allowed to walk,” acting only on a Kozuki’s order and unable even to defend itself without permission (Ch. 821) — the parsimonious reading is that Zunisha was part of Joy Boy’s inner circle or faction, and its punishment stems from that allegiance. The dominant community elaboration is that the “crime” was a mission-failure in Joy Boy’s final plan (failing to transport allies/resources at a decisive moment, or being deceived into a betrayal that helped topple the Ancient Kingdom), which would uniquely explain why the punishing authority let Zunisha live but chained it to endless, powerless walking — a servant kept as a monument to a lost cause.
