Chapter 840: The Iron Mask

Inside Germa 66’s military storage depot, Sanji’s older sister Reiju walks him through the family’s darkest secret: the legendary Germa army is composed of clone soldiers grown in bio-culture liquid — copies of a few superior fighters, fearless and faithful by design, replaceable in five years. Their father (the Vinsmoke patriarch, “his majesty”) built this on Dr. Vegapunk’s youthful discovery of the “bloodline elements” — the “blueprints of life.” Brothers Ichiji and Niji arrive, having beaten the kitchen maid Cosette; Sanji attacks Niji but is subdued and reminded that Germa holds hostages of his in the East Blue. A childhood flashback then reveals why Sanji fled: the patriarch presented his children as his “greatest masterpieces” but Sanji’s modification failed — he was “nothing but a human.” Told his dead mother’s gentleness was a shadow to abandon and forbidden ever to cook, the boy was declared a failure, locked behind bars, and forced into an iron mask — the chapter’s title image — begging his father not to erase him.

• Germa 66 is a clone army. The soldiers float “alive” in bio-culture liquid, are all the same face, are copies of just a few superior fighters, are programmed fearless-in-death and utterly faithful, and take ~5 years to grow into a “20-year-old soldier.” The world does not know they are clones (p. 2–6).
• Germa is a “nation of science” the Vinsmokes have run for generations; the patriarch (Father / “his majesty”) is a brilliant scientist (p. 3–5).
• Vegapunk’s “blueprints of life.” In his youth Dr. Vegapunk discovered the presence of bloodline elements in living things — “in essence, he found the blueprints of life,” “very nearly a step into the realm of godhood.” Judge (Father) joined a law-skirting research team with Vegapunk in foreign territory; the team was disbanded / absorbed by the World Government and Vegapunk was arrested, but Father escaped and continued the research into copying and augmenting life alone at Germa (p. 3–5).
• Sanji’s four siblings: older sister Reiju and brothers Ichiji (numbered “1”), Niji (“2”), Yonji (“4”) — Sanji is the third son (“3”). All share the curly Vinsmoke eyebrow (p. 6–13).
• Sanji’s modification failed. His siblings developed superhuman exoskeletons and strength equal to full-grown men as children; Sanji alone “is no different than the way he was born … is nothing but a human” (p. 13–14).
• Sanji’s mother is dead. His love of cooking comes from her; Judge tells him “stop chasing her shadow” and forbids him: “Never cook again” (p. 14–15).
• The iron mask. Declared a worthless failure (“he wants to make it so you were never born”), the boy Sanji was imprisoned in a cell and clamped into an iron mask (p. 16–17).
• Germa holds East-Blue hostages of Sanji’s to keep him obedient (“Don’t fight back, or blood will run into the East Blue”) (p. 8–9).
