Summary
The Summit War surges toward the scaffold. Aokiji encases Whitebeard in an Ice Ball, but the old man’s tremors crack the freeze loose (“vibrations don’t seem to freeze very well”) and Whitebeard runs the admiral through with pure Haki — an intangible strike that bites even a Logia body. Onlookers gasp “Is Aokiji dead?!”; he is not (“Of course not, fool!!”) and answers with Ice Block: Partisan. Jozu interposes his diamond body to buy Whitebeard’s advance (“Pops, go on ahead!! …Jozu. Diamond…”) and is caught in Aokiji’s ice. Across the plaza the exhausted Luffy grinds out Gear Second to keep charging for Ace, only to be intercepted by a Marine vice admiral who lectures him — “It takes more than effort alone to save someone… guts alone aren’t enough” — and drops him with a Finger-Pistol blow. Marines jeer that “a piece of trash like that” leading Whitebeard’s charge demeans the great pirate, when Ivankov of the Revolutionary Army erupts into the field (“I told you this would happen!! See?!”) and has the spent Luffy patched up. Jinbei hauls the boy clear as Luffy screams that Ace is “the only brother I have in the entire world.” Refusing to be pitied, Whitebeard declares “This will be my final battle!” and tells Jinbei “I’ll entrust Luffy to you!” before charging the Marine line (“We’re coming… Ace”). Commander Marco surges ahead — and is smashed down by a single blow. The striker is revealed: Garp, “the Legend of the Navy,” at last making his move, planting himself across the pirates’ path with a roar — “You brats!! If you want to get past me, it’ll be over my dead body!!” The grandfather of both the captive and his rescuer now stands as the last wall before the scaffold.
New reveals
- Whitebeard frozen, then free. Aokiji’s Ice Ball seals Whitebeard (“WHITEBEARD IS FROZEN!!”), but his quake-tremors break the ice — “Vibrations don’t seem to freeze very well… I guess it’s no use” (pp. 3-5).
- Whitebeard’s “pure Haki” stab. He runs Aokiji through with an attack the crowd calls pure Haki — landing on the admiral’s intangible Logia body. “Is Aokiji dead?!” / “Of course not, fool!! — Ice Block: Partisan!!” (p. 5).
- Jozu screens the advance. Diamond Jozu tells Whitebeard to “go on ahead” and engages Aokiji’s ice (“Diamond… Jozu,” KRASH/KRAK) (p. 6).
- Luffy’s Gear-Second last push. Out of gas, Luffy forces “G-Gear… Two!!” to keep running for the scaffold (pp. 7-8).
- A vice admiral’s doctrine + block. An unnamed Marine vice admiral stops Luffy: “It takes more than effort alone to save someone. You’ve got to have power. Guts alone aren’t enough, Straw Hat Luffy,” then strikes with Finger Pistol (pp. 9-10).
- Ivankov surfaces at Marineford. The giant-faced Revolutionary Ivankov is identified (“That giant face!! It’s Ivankov of the Revolutionary Army!!”); he crows “I told you this would happen!! See?!” and has Luffy patched up (pp. 12-13).
- Whitebeard names it his last fight. “This will be my final battle!” — and he hands Luffy’s safety to Jinbei: “I’ll entrust Luffy to you!” (p. 14).
- Garp enters the war. “The Legend of the Navy” decks Commander Marco and blocks the path to the platform: “Who gave you the order to move out?!” — “It’s Garp!!” — “You brats!! If you want to get past me, it’ll be over my dead body!!” (pp. 18-19).

Notable panels
- Pages 1-2 — Title spread (decorative): “HEADQUARTERS — ORIS PLAZA” over a pinball-machine parody, “SUPER ONE PIECE / BATTLE FRUITS NINE,” with the Straw Hats rendered as numbered apple/baseball figures (Luffy reclining on a couch at center). Open questions raised
- Can a pure-Haki strike actually kill an admiral, or only wound — what are the limits of hitting a Logia “directly”?
- How badly is Jozu hurt holding the line against Aokiji’s ice?
- Will Garp truly stand “to the death” against his own grandsons, or break when the moment comes?
- Now that Whitebeard has called this his “final battle,” how does the entrusting of Luffy to Jinbei pay off if Whitebeard falls?
