Marineford’s military spectacle is anchored to a single family torn across the battle line. By putting Garp — the grandfather of both Ace and Luffy — bodily between the Navy and his grandsons, Oda converts the war’s stakes from faction-vs-faction into blood-vs-duty, the negative-space tragedy that the rest of the arc (and Garp’s later arc) pays off.
