The seed
The name サトリ (Satori) carries two overlapping real-world meanings, both of which describe the power he is about to demonstrate:
- 悟り (satori) — the Zen Buddhist term for enlightenment / sudden awakening / clear perception. It slots into the Skypiea arc’s pervasive religious motifs (Priests, Ordeals, “a power granted only to the faithful”).
- The satori (覚 / さとり) of Japanese folklore — a mountain yokai that reads minds: it perceives a traveler’s unspoken thoughts and says them aloud before he can act. This is an almost literal description of Mantra: anticipating an attack before it lands.
Satori is the first Mantra user shown on-page, so his name pre-announces the mechanic the reader is about to be taught.

The 悟り / satori-yokai double meaning is on the surface for Japanese-language readers the moment Mantra is demonstrated (Ch. 246, 2002). SBS Vol. 29 then confirmed Oda named the Priests after religious concepts. English-language fans picked it up via translator notes and OP Wiki etymology sections soon after.
Why this matters
This is Oda’s name-encodes-the-power playbook applied to a faculty rather than a Devil Fruit: the first practitioner of a new ability is given a name that means that ability, so the etymology functions as a quiet label for the mechanic the chapter is introducing. Generalization: when a brand-new power debuts in One Piece, check the demonstrating character’s name first — Oda frequently front-loads the mechanic into the name (here, “Satori” = perception/mind-reading = Observation Haki). The religious-term naming set for Enel’s Priests (Satori / Gedatsu / Ohm / Shura) is itself a coherent Buddhist-vocabulary convention signalling a shared faction.
